I don't really see the comparison between avila and dunn. Dunn has consistently hit 35-40 home runs minus his awful 2011 campaign. Dunn also usually walks a ton to go with his strike outs. I think dunn will still turn it around this year, he is hitting his normal amount of home runs, 2011 he hit only 5 all year or something. I believe he has 5 or 6 so far this year.
Hes batting 135 or something like that......and cant even make contact like avila vs lefties. But i agree dunn does walk alot more. Hard to walk when your constantly hitting with an 0-2 count. Inge had the same problems. Take first pitch fastball down the middle, then swing and miss at some off speed junk pitch.
I understand the need to rest guys, but why Kelly & Santiago in the lineup at the same time? Just cuz Kelly hits left-handed does not mean he's any better than Tui or Avisail against a RH pitcher.
IMO Tigers 1-5 very solid (and V-Mart will come around and Jackson will be back sooner than later). That leaves Peralta, Infante, and Dirks which is very nice for a 2nd half of an order. You expect the pitchers 1-4 to have a great chance to win every night and the 5 pitcher still a 50/50 shot. I don't see the tigers success depending on whether their catcher can hit .200 vs .250. I believe the suspect part will always be whether the bullpen can hold many leads they will be given from our starting pitching.
Something Prince didn't do with a 3-0 count.......I know Prince has the green light, but 3-0 count noone on or out and Jacks it up.......He's on my fantasy team so I wasn't happy about that.
If Peralta is going to get a day off...better against the Astros than against Texas. I would have preferred Garcia in center....hopefully he gets a start soon.
So i tuned into the game just in time to see avila come up with men on 1st and 3rd and nobody out.....and a lefty pitching.....and surprise, he struck out.....again......but at least he made contact in his last AB to ground out to the 2B. Either a K, a G-4, or a HR with lil al. But thats nitpicking, WE WON. Just getting tired of watching avila struggle and have NO chance of hitting lefties.
This team has to find a way to get runners home from 3rd with less than 2 outs or they will be in trouble. The more runs we push across gives us cushion with our bullpen.
@Cleaves 2 million,
You are correct, Detroit leaves too many LOB and fails at RISP. This has been the MO for the last 7 years. (Gosh, that's how long Capt. Mumbles has been here) I think some of these bombers need to bunt (if they know how) and give up on the long ball. Hell, in most cases just a fly play gets a run.
Garcia gets his first MLB homer. A three run homer. Then gets a late jump on a sharply hit ball to center, and the Stros have their lead off man on second in the fourth.
Welp, a balk and Carlos Pena single later and that lead off runner is in. Going off a very small "eye-ball" test sample. But I don't see Avasail as a centerfielder. I know I see Max in a jam, two on, nobody down with one in already.
A little help from some awful base running, or maybe bad managing. Scherzer gets the rookie hung up and picks him off. And manages to end the inning without any further damage.... Nice!
