Tigers can't score against P.O.S. Pelfrey, and Rick allows 9 baserunners in 4.1 innings against a team with a .242 BA and no Joe Mauer. Sadly, the way the Tigers have played against inferior teams this season, this game was pretty predictable.

Guess they took two days off instead of one.

And Phil Coke should have taken Andy Dirks with him to Toledo. Another FAIL with RISP and < 2 outs for Andy last night. 26 RBI in 343 AB now. The guy is so NOT clutch, it's maddening. Just for fun, I looked up his splits with runners on base. He's hitting .255 overall with someone on base and .292 with a runner on first. But then it gets really bad....

Runners on 1st-2nd: 5 for 24 (.208)
Runners on 1st-3rd: 2 for 8 (.250), sacrifice flies = 0
Runners on 2nd-3rd: 0 for 8 (.000), sacrifice flies = 0
Bases loaded: 1 for 11 (.091), sacrifice flies = 1

Total BA with runner on 3rd and < 2 outs: 3 for 15 (.200), sacrifice flies = 1

Dirks, Torii and Miggy were my let downs. But Miggys only in there since he's raised the bar so high for himself. (I was anticipating greatness after that beutally ugly swing at the first pitch in the ninth. Seems he dupes guys more and more with late, ugly, or ridiculous cuts early in his ab's lately)Rick wasn't at top form by any means yesterday. But I think three of the baserunners were infield "hits". The one to Prince and the one off Cabreras glove shoulda/coulda been outs. And then came Phil....

Miggy gets a pass, of course.

This season with a runner on 3rd in any combination:

Miguel Cabrera is 22 for 49 (.449), or 89 points ABOVE his BA.

Andy Dirks is 6 for 33 (.182), or 63 points BELOW his BA.

Some people do their best work in clutch situations, and some people crap the bed.

Who are you looking to occupy Andy's unproductive spot in the order Howie?

I understand the choices are slim. Tui, even though he's cooled off, is still hitting RH pitchers better than Andy, and he has 28 RBI (vs. 26 for Andy) in fewer than half of Andy's at-bats. Even Don Kelly would be an upgrade in production (20 RBI in fewer than half of Andy's AB).

Might be time for Castellanos, though Leyland has hinted they won't be bringing him up early.

Andy Dirks: 343 AB, 26 RBI

Tuiasosopo + Kelly: 281 AB, 48 RBI.

Leyland has the wrong platoon combo going.

Andy Dirks is nothing more than a AAAA player that should be on the bench for depth at most... There are much more talented guys in the minors that could give the Tigers what he is doing.. at the very least.. and maybe more.

Castellanos can not be less productive than Dirks... and I could list at least 2 or three guys in the minors that could do what he is doing.. which the potential to be better... All in all.. Dirks is the least of the tigers problems right now.. they need to worry about getting Miggy healthy right now.

Leyland talking about letting Vmart play 3rd and moving miggy to dh... I like the idea.. Vmart has actually played 1st well.. and should be able to do better than what miggy is doing at third while nursing the injury... I say go for it...

Phil Coke was not a huge issue.. he was not being used in high stress situations for a while and actually was lowering his era for the last month... That being said.. I think Leyland can use alverez in more meaningful spots and for more than just 1 batter.. or inning for that matter. He makes the bull pen a little deeper. I doubt Al Al makes the playoff roster if they plan on putting Porcello in the pen. I take Coke over AL AL in the playoffs any day.. I am sure I will hear about that.

Yeah but lowering the ERA doesnt matter in his job....hes paid to face lefties when needed....his ERA didnt change last night...but one pitch and he helped add 2 more runs to porcellos night.....if the batter was a righty....i would of been more confident with al al...then coke vs a lefty....at least al al can get you a K in that situation....coke.....well its coke.....he blows.

Phil Coke was a huge issue Vice. He's fucking horrible. The second he took the hill, ball game over! High stress, low stress or no stress. He's not going to help.

Alverez helps the bullpen more than coke.. he can go more than 1 inning.. and can get righties out... its a huge help to leyland to have him there as an option.

Alvarez is a temporary solution, he is not the answer and tigers fans will be hating him a month from now if he stays in the bigs.

I don't think so gvsu... I think he can be a decent lefty out of the pen.. he isn't a world beater as a starter.. but he wasn't getting rocked.. he was going fairly deep into games.. I think asking him to fill the role coke had will be easy enough for him.. he is also just 24.. I don't think he will be the next mo riveria.. but I surely think he can eat a few innings here and there and get lefties out.

No reason he has to be temporary.. young kid that is a decent lefty... good relievers have came from much less.

Now do I think he is ever going to be a above average mlb starter? Nope... Reliever.. Maybe. Tigers have a few guys in aa ball that will be near ready to come up and spot start next year.. so they don't need Alverez as a spot starter that bad after this year.
