I'd be cool with Perkins. Had my sights set on Brett Cecil earlier in the year, but with the All-Star selection, I'm not banking on him. It shouldn't really take much to solve the bullpen issues. I'd be fine with dealing Garcia, as I don't think he's special in any way and outfielders basically grow on trees. But I'd rather we don't move any more catchers or any of the pitching we already have. Just looking for another lefty in the pen so Smyly can do his thing and Coke won't have to be around.

I said Chisek awhile ago, Just remember he does play for the Marlins. This kid pitches just fine. I'd take him.

Yeah, ERA is slightly higher for Cishek this season (3.24), but he was under 3.00 the two previous seasons. Good WHIP still, and 17 of 19 in save opps. Plus, he throws strikes, which too many of our current relievers labor to do.

I don't want Gregg for the reasons Cleaves outlined. And agree with Iffy that Papelbon is on the downside of his career and still owed something like $14 mill a season for the next couple of years. We need bullpen help, but not at THAT price.

And here's one more thought on our bullpen needs .... what might be out there for reliable middle relief and setup help? I know it's a small sample, but Benoit appears to be just fine as a closer, and Smyly has proved to be money as an 7th-8th inning guy.

The problem is bullpen depth. Just look at the Texas series. Twice, we had 5-run leads and Leyland used Smyly and Benoit. We should have other guys who are reliable enough with a 5-run lead, so that we can save our two best guys for closer games. But we don't.

The Tigers I think are feeling OK with Benoit closing, he has some experience and I think Howie is right the middle relief might be what would be easier and cheaper to find and really be where the help is needed......I have been saying all along the help should if possable come from with in and we should not pay a crazy price for a rent a player.....There is a lefty in Toledo and a righty in Erie that could be of help in middle and clean up relief.....Rondon is not a closer right now but work in the 6th and 7th has been good.....BASEBALL TONITE!!!!!!

I'm not saying DON'T get a closer, as it would free up Smyly and Benoit to go back to 7th-8th inning duty. I'm just saying we need bullpen help, period, even if it's reliable middle and setup guys.

This is where the Tigers miss Octavio Dotel. I was looking at his numbers from last season. Very solid, even at age 38 ... 58 innings, 62 strikeouts, 3.57 ERA and only 12 walks. Perfect for a 7th inning, protecting a lead when the starter's pitch count gets too high. He could come in, throw strikes, and get a key whiff with a runner in scoring position. Right now, that guy is Alburquerque or Rondon, both of whom scare the hell out of me. Or we use Smyly for two innings, which makes him unavailable the next game.

I think value and contract will be looked at long and hard. Detroit could get a guy cheaper but they may have to eat 2-3 years on a bad contract...andrew bailey.

I sure wish San Diego would just fall out of the race they have a few good young arms.

I thought this might be of interest, from MLB Rumors:

The Yankees have unconditionally released outfielder Brennan Boesch, the team announced via press release. The 28-year-old had not seen action with the big league club since the end of May, and had reportedly been battling a shoulder injury in the minors.
New York signed Boesch to a $1.5MM deal late in the spring after he was released by the Tigers. Over 53 plate appearances early this year with the Yankees, he posted a .275/.302/.529 line and hitting three home runs. He also saw 37 Triple-A plate appearances, he managed only a .200/.351/.267 triple-slash. Boesch's best season as a big leaguer came in 2011, when he provided Detroit with .283/.341/.458 production -- and 16 long balls -- over 472 plate appearances.

Not much of an effort put in by the (expensive) offense.

Kelly has been playing better lately. If the Tigers tied it...then you'd still have Tui to bat for Dirks. I am sure not going to try and find a way to blame Leyland when the Tiger offense only managed two hits. The loss is totally on the offense's shoulders in this loss.
