In case you missed it, in last night's game against the Habs, Pavel Datsyuk carried the puck into the offensive zone along the right boards. He deked around a defender and cut into the high slot. He did a reverse 180° and with his back to the goal whipped an insanely precise backhand shot over Carey Price's left shoulder and into the top right corner of the net with the wicked speed of a Chara slapshot.

Seriously, what other players in the world could make that play? What other players in the world have a backhand shot that lethal?

Yeah, perhaps. There are maybe five guys on the planet that might be able to do that. I guarantee there are thousands who saw Datsyuk do it last night, are trying to do it today and failing miserably - including hundreds of NHL'ers and prospects.

Unfortunate as it was, goalie interference was the correct call.

I disagree. Here's why:

RE: Datsyuk No Goal

Price was moving left-to-right in net. Abdelkader came from Price's right side. Datsyuk backhand whipped the puck over Price's LEFT shoulder from the high slot.

Simple physics proves the bump at the right outside of the crease did not alter Price's ability to stop the puck, because the puck passed him in an area he willingly jettisoned. If anything, the bump from the right kept Price closer to making the save than he otherwise would have been.

I usually defend Price, but that was a weak call IMO.

Looks to me that as he is moving in to position, he brings his hands up to contact Abdelkater. He initiated the contact, therefore it logically is impossible for him to have been interfered with.

Looks to me like Price sold this one.

I disagree. Here's why:

Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal.

Abdelkader was in the crease. Doesn't matter who initiates contact, or which direction the goalie is intending to move per the rule. Don't like it? Change the rule. I'm not saying that it is right, but it was correct.

Abdelkader was OUTSIDE the crease.

I could see Tavares making that move as well. Crosby too.

I've never seen Crosby put the velocity on his backhand that Datsyuk demonstrated last night. I could see Crosby potting a goal like that, but with a slower more fluttery backhand shot.

Sadly, I don't see much of Tavares in action...mainly game highlights. Among those highlights, I don't recall ever seeing him pot a filthy backhand shot in a game situation. If you've got an example of a wicked Tavares backhand, please share it.

Kane I could see successfully pulling off what Datsyuk did last night... There's no denying the dude's got handles, moves, elite offensive awareness and a wicked backhand.

Yep, people may not like the rule but the rules as they are this was a good non goal. Doesn't matter who initiated contact.

I don't have any Tavares examples, but I could see him potting one of those.

Honestly, I can't stand Crosby, but I think he has a very strong backhand shot.

For what it's worth, Kerry Fraser says it was the right call...

Fraser: Datsyuk's disallowed goal on Price the correct call - Article - TSN

It was a marginal call that could've easily gone either way. Fraser would've been saying it was a good goal if the goal had been allowed in the game and Habs fans were the ones screaming foul. He's just sticking up for his referee fraternity.

Honestly, though, I didn't bring up the Datsyuk no-goal to start a bitch-thread about the call; I brought up the play to celebrate the Magician's handiwork. That shit was amazing!

All I'm gonna say is that Carey Price is very good at initiating contact when a player gets close to his crease (maybe the best in the league).

Yeah, I'm not saying they got the call wrong. I'm saying it was sold very well, and I would not have been upset if it went the other way. Maybe would have preferred it.
