I heard a rumo(u)r that we might be trading his salary to Carolina along with either Jurco or Pulkinnen.
Feel like it's gonna take more than that. They got Terravinen for Bickells much lesser salary ($4.5M paid, $4M on cap) and Bickell can still play for them. Datsyuk is $7.5M, although being paid only $5.5M which is more appealing. That said, they certainly have the cap space, but they also have an owner who isn't exactly a cap spender.
They have to be real careful what they allow to come off the books. Teams and players could get real creative signing deals they have no intention of fulfilling. In this case it sucks because Datsyuk's motives are pretty clear but I can see instances of players 'going home' a few years into a longer contract if the team could just erase the contract.Got to be something in the new CBA where if a player leaves the league his cap hit (If 1 exists) it comes off the books. No need for a team to be punished for a player's decision.
No, it exists for a very specific reason: cap circumvention. If you sign a 35+ player to a long contract, front loaded and resulting in a diluted cap hit, and then after a few seasons that player retires, the team can't be rewarded with saving cap space. Teams take a risk every time they sign a player, and that risk increases in a 35+ contract. If injuries end a career, there's LTIR at least. But if a guy ends their career early, well...teams should've considered that when they signed a long deal (generally speaking) with an older player. Usually these come with the understanding the player will finish the contract out, so really it's just Datsyuk kinda screwing his team over. His reasoning is understandable of course, can't blame a guy for wanting to go home and be with family, but the Wings though he'd be around for 3 more years. Datsyuk said as much. But my point is, it's a business decision, every contract is a risk, and GMs job is to weigh risk/reward. Got burned in this case.Got to be something in the new CBA where if a player leaves the league his cap hit (If 1 exists) it comes off the books. That's only one side of the equation. Chicago was also much more fucked than Detroit is in terms of the cap.Feel like it's gonna take more than that. If Detroit keeps this hit, they can not afford to add. If Chicago kept Bickell's, they could not afford to ice a lineup. I think thats also why Teravinen was available for that deal, Chicago was not going to be able to afford to sign him either.
Frankly, and I understand everything he's done for the team, but if I'm a Red Wings fan I'm pretty pissed off at Datsyuk. What was the point in signing a 3 year contract if you were unsure if you wanted to stay there for 3 years? If the $7 million doesn't matter to him today why did it 2 years ago? It's not like he didn't know at the time he could get similar money in Russia. They have to be real careful what they allow to come off the books.
