Daniel Moskos has been Designated For Assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Thus ending his Pirates career. (From Bucs Dugout.com) This just makes not picking Matt Wieters in the 07 Draft look even worse.

My God, Dave Littlefield was Terrible.

Right on target.

A couple of additional thoughts:

- Some will remember that, when Moskos was drafted, it was widely reported (among other things) that his arm motion was "maximum effort," meaning that there was no projectable improvement likely..... AND that he was an injury risk. His career has demonstrated the "no projectable improvement" notion, and his recent elbow problems are NOT surprising.

- It demonstrates how little value the Huntington front office sees in Moskos..... that they would DFA him to make space on the 40-man roster for Eric Fryer, who was hitting .167 (19 for 114) at Indianapolis..... AND is likely to go back to Indy (and perhaps be DFA'd himself) as soon as Barajas is game-ready. So, maybe a week of Fryer as McKenry's backup is worth more to the Pirates than Moskos.

I remember that draft so well. The only time in my life that I've been completely flabbergasted at who my team picked. Covering Penguins and Steelers too - I have never been more dismayed at a draft pick.

I had paid SOME attention to the first round of the draft in the past..... especially in the big debate year, Bullington vs. Upton. Many fans have succumbed to revisionist history in claiming that it was an obviously bad move by Littlefield to draft Bullington. My recollection is that fans on discussion boards were about evenly split between preferring Bullington and Upton. The "shit hit the fan," so to speak, only AFTER the draft, when Creech and Littlefield were quoted that Bullington's ceiling was as a #3 starter. (And we all know how THAT turned out.)

At any rate, to get back to your post..... I remember a very similar feeling in the wake of the announcement about drafting Moskos..... completely flabbergasted and totally dismayed. I remember thinking, "How in the world could Littlefield do that? He can't be THAT dumb."

Later, I remember reading an assertion (on a different discussion board) that Littlefield intentionally screwed the Pirates by drafting Moskos..... because he already knew he was going to be fired due to his disastrous acquisition of Matt Morris. Heck..... I don't believe that for a second (since anyone who pulled such a trick would never get another job in baseball, and we know that Littlefield was hired almost immediately by the Cubs)..... but the assertion DOES demonstrate that Littlefield didn't have a monopoly on "dumb."

Two final notes:

1. Isn't it interesting that the Cubs' fall from grace seems to coincide with their hiring of Littlefield?

2. I'm kind of surprised that the Pirates DFA'd BOTH Moskos and Slaten..... depleting their lefty bullpen depth. Perhaps they see Reyes and Wilson (and perhaps Owens or Locke) as viable replacements.

I refuse to talk about Moskos out of bitterness , but maybe the Cubs hired Littlefield because he screwed over the Pirates... :noidea:

I kid, of course.

Or do I? :suspicious:

Drafting a reliever early in the first round is just stupid anyway you look at it.

it is odd we get rid of 2 pretty reasonable lefty specialists when trading season is heating up and pitchers are falling all over the place.

they would have been good chips as a package but not sure why they didnt get something in return.

in the last 10 years, is there any other team with as many first round ZEROES than the pirates. does someone have the time and the masochistic tendencies to do the research.
thanks

They just dealt Martis so there is another very low marginal player gone.

As for Moskos I really can't stand to think about that draft or the Bullington fiasco or the JVB forced to be a pitcher.....

This is just a testament of how far NH has come in a short time with rebuilding the pitching depth in the minors.
