Dan made 28 field goals which is very solid, but again what's the league avg maybe 20. Hey I'm not arguing against Dan he's a very good kicker. It's the contract. If we were a 10-6 team with no cap problems I would be very happy with this signing, but we're not. I don't expected everyone to agree with my view point i'm just expressing why I fill the way I fill.
his contract for 7 yrs is equivalent to one year for Romo. so your comparison of his contract to other skill players isn't apples to apples. His contract is in the realm of kicker's contracts. It isn't like we paid him like a Left tackle. We paid him like a Kicker. His contract isnt the reason we have cap problems.

I don't believe I said his contract was the reason we have cap problems. My point is with the cap issues we have at this point you have to make hard decisions on who gets paid and who doesn't. I personally think for where this team is kicker isn't a huge priority. didn't compare his contract with A skill player. It shouldn't be.

Think back a few years when a Dallas FG was an adventure. Then tell me he's not worth it. Take a look at the contract. Dan Bailey - Dallas Cowboys - 2014 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

From the rotoworld link. Ya gotta admit the DT comment was funny...

Only in Jerry's World. More cap strapped than any team in football, the Cowboys will likely have to convert salaries into prorated "signing" bonuses elsewhere on the roster to fit Bailey's head-scratching new deal into their already in-the-red finances. Bailey gets a $4.5 million signing bonus and $3.4 million per year in new money. We don't have any problem with Bailey -- he's 26 and one of the top placekickers in the game -- but the Cowboys' contractual dealings are annually the most preposterous in football. Maybe they'll bulk up Bailey and get him to double at defensive tackle. Dallas is currently nearly $22 million over the cap.

Looking at the specifics I found it looks like he needs to stay the same kicker he has been for 3 more years to make it a good deal for us, which he should. We could cut him before 2016, but replacing him and his dead money still is a real big cap hit at that point. Replacing him before 2017 gets a lot easier. Assuming he still is a top kicker after 2016 and assuming we still have a cap problem he could also get restructured at that point. Well, knowing our horrible cap management we may need to restructure him before 2016, but lets hope not...

What Ian Rapoport has failed to mention is Baileys 2014 salary is unchanged. His new contract takes effect in 2015. What I can't find though is does his bonus kick in in 2014 or 15.

It's an extension, right? If so, he gets his bonus now and it starts hitting our cap this year (1/5th).

no it's an extension so not a penny of it kicks in before 2015 season

He is still playing for chump change this coming year.

That was the first thing reported about it ..... "contract starts in 2015" we had him this year anyway( 2014)

I thought so, just wasn't sure. According to Todd Archer Dallas was going to place a 2nd Rd tender (2.124 M) on Bailey. The bonus he received was 4M. Adding 800,000 to his 900,000 contract, possibly saving the team 400,000. Next season.

Twist according to "over the cap" Bailey is due 800,000 bonus money in 14. I understand a little about nfl contracts but I'm far from an expert. I'm out of this argument.

What I can say is either way this deal looks to save Dallas at least 400T. I doubt any team would give up a 2nd to sign a K.

Thats my only problem with this contract guys. I'm in no way a Bailey hater, but come on Jerry is becoming more and more like Al Davis with each contract he makes it's time for him to please step down. Jerry is killing this once proud franchise :gaah:.

No. He gets his bonus money now. So it hits the cap now.

I always love empty years at the end like is. It allows the team to restructure and move cap room back, or end the contract early if the player doesn't play up to the value of the contract.

Bailey has been as close to being automatic than any kicker we have had in the past 20 years. Money well spent.
