Anyone agree that Eli Manning is the Derek Jeter of football (overrated)?

Yes, he's overrated but super bowl wins are the only stat that dingleberries look at

Hard to tell exactly. Does Jeter have an older brother better at baseball than he is?

Nothing to do with Peyton. It just seems that Eli is given a lot of credit for the Giants winning, when it was essentially a Hail Mary to David Tyree and one well thrown ball to Mario Manningham (to which the catches were MUCH better than the throws) that led to the Giants winning.

He has played behind a good O-Line for his whole career, and just as importantly, it has been essentially the same O-Line. The guy hardly ever gets sacked.

With all of that said, Eli still leads to league in turnovers for the past 3 or 4 seasons.

I bet Ben Roethlisberger (and Aaron Rodgers) would give their left nut to play behind a good (healthy) O-Line.

You can add Matt Ryan to the list too, Falcons O-line was horrible yesterday

Didn't the O's win in a walk off against the ChiSox this weekend? Extras maybe? I didn't see it, but I suspect there was plenty of celebrating going on.

Comparing sports? I'm not sure Football and Baseball are held to same standard in that regard. You have yet to sell me on that part. I think Football, Quality of opponent has more weight. Feel free to disagree. Not to mention the Orioles are in the Middle of trying to get into the playoffs. Its only week 1 in the NFL. There is no landscape of what the playoff situation looks like.

You're also confusing me with someone that actually gives a shit if someone celebrates or Not. I don't care if they run up the score in a blowout either.

World made the connection that beating the Bills in a close on is the same as the Jets beating the Buccs in a close one. Its not...that's all I really saying here.

I think the better comparison is Eli is like Jeff Weaver. Had flashes of brilliance, especially in the postseason (think 2006 for Weaver) but really was mostly mediocre. Has a brother, Jared, that is clearly much better than he is.

I can't believe they lost to the Saints yesterday, albeit in N.O. The Falcs don't seem to get mentioned among the NFC contenders nearly as much as the 49ers, Seahawks, and Packers do, yet they are just as good, IMO.

I didn't watch a second of the Jets game. I also didn't think the Pats (or Kraft's) celebration was excessive. Just Hammer trying to stir the shit.

Yeah...those immortal greats like Trent Dilfer, Mark Rypien, Jeff Hostetler and Doug Williams (to name a few) have won Super Bowls. Some were even SB MVP.

I watched the Jets game, and after Folk's kick, the camera panned to Geno Smith, and he had his chest out like he really did something other than get hit late out-of bounds to give them the win.

Both Weaver bros have respectable post-season #s.

Only one Manning Bro can make that claim.

One guess who?

It's hard to win on the road in the NFL

i was commenting on the celebration, not the circumstance of it and specifically hammers reaction to it vs. having nothign to say about the Jets players going nuts

hammer isn't smart enough to draw the distinction you did

you bailed him out on that topic

i dont care how much celebration goes on, either way

Yeah that was a little Cam-esque. I've been trying to find a pic of it. But, it was his first NFL game/victory, fresh out of college, and they weren't given much of a chance at all...let him gloat a little. He won't have much more to puff up about this season if it goes as most of us suspect.

If he makes a habit out of it...? Bleh.

I also won't clobber the Pats for winning on the road, in division, with a last-minute FG. That's football.

And, once again, my attempt at humor falls flat.

Oh well.....

I don't understand the concept ever, in any sport. Don't want to get trounced? Get/play better! Tell your owner to spend some of that $$ he is sitting on, get better players, and do better next time.

Well, in basketball and baseball there might be some merit to it, for instance leaving your starters in to showboat for the 4th quarter in basketball or bunting in the 9th with a huge lead. But in football, what are you supposed to do other than keep the clock running?

So you think that Eli was the most important player in winning their 2 SB's?

In the first against NE, you can't argue he chucked up a Hail Mary and Tyree made a great catch. The Giant D gets no credit for that game, and they were the ones that shut down Brady and the high-octane offense. Eli MVP. Yeah...right.

In the second game against NE, Eli had a tough time against a Pats D that was one of the worst in the league. The Pats also played with Gronk acting merely as a decoy because he was hurt. Admittedly, the throw to Mannigham was a good one, but the catch by Manningham was spectacular. He caught that ball along the sideline with one man in tight coverage, and another ready to wallop him. Eli MVP.

The problem is that the award has to be given to somebody, and in a game where no one person really stood out, give it to the QB.
