A bit surprised at this one. I didn't think Stubbs would be gone this quickly. Ruggiano was hardly tearing it up in AAA either. I was expecting Morris to be gone soon, though. The turnstile continues...

I thought Stubbs was a mistake to begin with, so I'm glad they didn't wait around too long. After a pretty bad start, Ruggiano has started to swing it better.
Thrown right into the fire, starting in LF vs. a lefty.
I have been unhappy with some moves. But I gotta say that the moves have been decisive. No more waiting for three months to see if someone will turn it around.
I heard that interview, and I gotta say, I don't fully agree with Evans' statement.Bobby Evans even admitted the other day they they "miscalculated" the LF situation.
I feel like it's been much more open with Evans.

So he "miscalculated" by not factoring in that BOTH Mac AND Parker would go down to injury? I get it that Parker was not hitting. But it was always assumed that Parker and Mac would battle it out, and one would emerge as at least a decent MLB LFer. When Parker failed, Mac was not there to get his shot.
How is that a miscalculation?
Signing Marerro or Stubbs or Morse or Ruggiano were all minor bandaids. I can't blame the FO for those not panning out. Choosing to sign Cueto AND Sammy instead of over-paying for Cespedes (who has only continually stated that he never had any desire to play in SF) is hardly the FO's fault either. How about their utter failure to trade the farm for an over-paid, Steroid-painted Braun? Nope, no blame coming from me.
I suspect Evans made that statement to appease the dullard fan and the loudmouth KNBR mic-jockeys (namely Kruger and Fitz)
Truthfully, I think the only legit criticism that can be levied against the FO is Duvall.
Sure, Span was a bad signing. But they wanted to move Pagan out from center, and they didn't have a shit-ton of cash to acquire an all star. They took a risk on Span, and it hasn't really panned out.
I was never a HUGE fan of the Sammy signing, but he offers some depth to the rotation and ultimately will not prove to be a HORRIBLE signing, just a not-great one.
Duvall, however, was never really even tried in the OF. Why? I have no idea. No one ever doubted his bat. It was just his defense that always a big question mark. So why not try him at the second easiest position on the diamond? Maybe his bat would not have translated to AT&T the way it does to the GAB. But he has become a legit power hitter in the NL, and the Giants are still in desperate need of a power hitter. I think it is fair to criticize them for that trade.
I said, when Leake signed with St Louis, that he would ultimately end up being the best value of all FA SPs last year. Seeing what he is doing this year is helping my point. However, there was something missing with him and his match with this org. We have no clue what it was, but it was clear that something didn't fit, and that was why neither side had much interest in moving forward with a new contract.I think they've learned their lesson there, about being more flexible with their minor leaguers. Their philosophy was get the minor leaguer comfortable at their natural position, and maybe when they're close to the bigs start to dabble at another position in AAA, if they must.
This year, more than I've seen, they been moving guys around at every level. In AAA alone, every guy has been playing at least 2, mostly 3 or even more positions. Shaw has played in LF sparingly, Dylan Davis shifted to 3B, Ryan Howard, drafted as a SS, has been playing 3B quite a bit. Dobson, a pretty good 1st baseman last year, has played 2B a lot this year. Obviously Arroyo has shifted to 3B. There are many more examples, but I think the point is they have learned to take some chances.
It's still tough for me to blame them, he was really rough defensively and just has no foot speed at all, so the fact that he's become a good LFer defensively is a minor miracle. And frankly, the timing didn't really work out much for him, he was blocked at all positions and Mike Leake was a necessary add that unfortunately didn't work out. It is too bad though, he would be real nice to have.
He has not appeared in a game since the 3rd, so this may only be for a few days.Things just keep looking up....
Mark Melancon was just placed on the DL
A strained flexor-pronator (forearm). Before you freak out, this occurs on the inside of the elbow, not the outside, so this shouldn't be a precursor to Tommy John.

My default opinion is to not spend money on a closer. But this team looked like it was really only a closer away, so in that situation, you need to get what you need.(another reason I was against the signing)
How many of us were expecting this kind of play? Sure, there were concerns. But the playoffs seemed to suggest that the only big need was a closer. Injuries and ineffectiveness sure has altered that perception. My default opinion is to not spend money on a closer. But so far, yeah. It is looking like a bust, in both performance and situation.

Those 2-3 guys didn't exist. And we had a lot of guys coming back/coming up who would fill that job. That high-inning reliever guy you want doesn't exist in the game today. Not in the regular season, at least. It's just the fact that they spent $62M to have a guy pitch 1 inning an appearance. Smith going down really stunk, but it would have been nice to have 2-3 real solid guys to bridge the gap to another real solid guy, knowing full-well Bochy was only going to use his best guy in very specific situations.
I don't mind spending money on relievers if they're going to pitch a lot of innings, but we knew going in that Melancon wasn't (even if the team was preforming as expected). That was always my problem.
