A bunch of NRI cuts yesterday. Nothing surprising.
Are you sure that Carlos Martinez is in big league camp? I don't remember reading that his deal included an invite, he has never been listed as an NRI on the team website (they eventually fix their errors), he hasn't appeared in a big league spring game and I've not heard any talk of him in camp.

No, I am not certain. But he is listed as an NRI on Roster Resources. But I do not have 100% faith in their accuracy.

Logically it makes sense that he is in camp. He is a biggish name. And just because he hasn’t appeared in a game doesn’t mean he isn’t there. Maybe he is nursing a minor (or major?) injury.

I will keep him listed until we hear confirmation one way or the other, but specific about NRIs is hard to get, so I doubt we will ever get confirmation either way.

I think I heard on one of the SF broadcasts that he is in camp and working with the staff.

I wouldn't trust Wiki for baseball purposes. I have no idea how often those get updated or who monitors them.

My count is 31 on the roster with 2 NRIs…
I have 30 on the 40 (not counting Longoria or Wade) and 1 NRI. I know he hasn't been reassigned (if he is officially an NRI to begin with) but since Carlos Martinez has yet to pitch in a spring training game and Opening Day is 5 days away he cannot be considered a possibility to break camp.
Is Bret Auerbach really a possibility for Opening Day?

I think Wade may be tz’s #32. Auerbach, I don’t think has a chance. But if he hasn’t been sent out, he is still technically an NRI.

Typically, the Giants send out catchers who don't have a chance by now. I'm a bit surprised he's been carried this long. I guess they wanted a 3rd catcher to help with the bullpen until Opening Day.

On a related note, I have no idea who is going to be the 2nd catcher in AAA. They signed Jhonny Pereda to catch there but unless Auerbach, Bailey or Genoves start in AAA, I have no clue who else is going to be ready in case Casali is injured or Bart doesn't do well.

The “cuts” and options don’t mean anything in actual practice. Guys not in MLB camp appear in games all the times.

My WAG about Auerbach is that he is still “up” as an attaboy for the kid. He had a great spring, and I think the org is making a point of letting him know it was noticed.

I don't think the Giants view Auerbach as strictly a catcher. I think FZ loves a guy who can move around the diamond and play defense wherever. That he can catch (and apparently pretty well) is an added bonus. I think he'll be up next year for sure. But he won't be on the 28 man roster Friday.

GREAT job by the scouting department.
