Alex Wood's numbers are beginning to look like what they have been for much of his career: 4.11 ERA, 3.47 FIP, 1.21 WHIP, 8/9 K/9, 3.96 SO/W ratio, and 50.9% GB rate

But why was it necessary? The Giants acquired Isan Diaz and Donovan Walton, I thought, for this very purpose. Machado hasn't even played in the big leagues since 2018. Of course, he is a middle infielder.
And Espinal's numbers were nothing special, but they were better than just about any other starting pitcher in Sacramento. The cost is higher than you think.

Disagree on the cost. It's close to nothing. Walton is hurt, IIRC, so that leaves Diaz. I believe Diaz is thought to not be ready for the show.

Machado may flame out, but he's had a breakthrough year in AAA at the plate. Decent lottery ticket, IMO.

I fully expect Machado to be DFA’d when craw or Estrada come back. And if he is lost, who cares. Diaz getting DFA’d might be something FZ didn’t want to risk.

That would make sense. However, Diaz has one option year left. His first option was used in 2019 and was optioned once in 2020 but that recalled the next day and put on the 60 day IL so that option year was not burned. His second option year was 2021. No options have been used in 2022.

As cal reported elshwere, Ford Proctor, his .607 OPS with the Rays earning him not just a minor league trade to the Giants but an addition to the 40 man roster. At this expense, Kervin Castro, who performed decently with the Giants last year and held his own in AAA (better than about 20 other pitchers, all of which were older than him).

Castro is gone. No way another organization doesn't pick him up.

I looked up Castro's numbers. He's been knocked around recently at AAA. Numbers are pretty ugly now. Apparently, that was enough for the FO to jettison him. Still seems a bit too soon, considering his age. Only Santos, Myers (who also recently got dfa'd) and Dabovich are younger. And for Castro's ugly ERA, it sits 22 of 41 pitchers used by Sacramento. And his WHIP was 28th of 41. The Giants keep Norwith Gudino and Cody Carroll on their AAA roster but get rid of Castro. They keep Donovan Walton and Alex Young on their 40 man roster but jettison Castro. They keep Yunior Marte on their active roster but jettison Castro. Did they make some kind of deal that they would add Proctor if the Rays traded him?
