And it sure sounds like he's not getting mounds of offers to play.

Hicks has no options left, BTW (optioned in '10, '11, '12). If he plays in the majors, he must pass through waivers to be sent to the minors. Ditto Ehire A.

Difference is that EA is on the 40 and Hicks is not. Hicks signed a minor league contract. He can start the season in Fresno (unless he has an out in his contract, but I doubt he does. He has never really done anything in his career to be able to negotiate that into his minor league/invite contract.)

They have three guys (Adrianza, Hicks, Colvin) for two spots, assuming Scoots goes on the DL. None of those three guys, IMO, will clear waivers. So, they're going to lose one. They'll lose two if Scoots doesn't go on the DL.

Hicks and Colvin signed minor league deals. They don't need to clear waivers (unless they have escape-clauses).

Interesting. I'm guessing Hicks has an out, because I've read that he needs to be kept on the 40 man or likely will be lost to another org.

That was exactly my point. He can go to the minors out of ST with no problem (he signed a minor-league contract), but if he goes to the majors (thus is added to the 40-man AND the active roster), then he has to pass through waivers. IMHO, that would be a really STUPID thing for the Giants to do for somebody who will be on the active roster for just 2-3 weeks (while Scutaro is getting ready), UNLESS :

1) the Giants are simply looking to showcase and then trade Hicks

2) the contract with Hicks allows him to opt out if not on the active roster by Apr 1st (or some short date) - because they would lose him anyways if he doesn't make the team

3) they fear Scutaro will take more than a few weeks to get ready for play

Abreu cleared waivers and is expected to sign a minor league deal with the Giants. He doesn't belong on the current roster, but I figured I'd let people know.

He hasn't shown me anything in his time with the org, but the PsTB seem to like him, so I would rather have him than not have him.

According to Baggs, J.C. Gutierrez has made the team in favor of Derek Law. Perez over Colvin. Hicks and Adrianza, Scutaro to the DL.

Baggs also speculates that the corresponding move to clear space on the 40-man roster for Gutierrez and Hicks will be the assignment of Angel Villalona. He mentions Noonan, Kieschnick, and Kickham as other candidates.

Giants expected to formally announce final roster tomorrow. They won't have to make a corresponding 40-man move until Sunday, and I would expect we won't know until then anyway, as Sabean will be working the phones for a possible trade. It will be tough though, many teams rosters are as full as the Giants.

Wow.

AnVil DFA'd. I would be shocked if he makes it through. He certainly has baggage, but he still has a high ceiling.

Kieschnick claimed by Arizona. He has a ceiling now of a #5 OF, so no big loss.
