I really can't say I was unhappy with his play either. I expected a miserable game because Buffalo can rush the passer. Still, sacked three times and at least two of them were because he hesitated and waited for the rush to arrive instead of just throwing the ball away. The third was clearly on Andre. He made a good throw on the run to Jones on his TD, and the pass to Green for six was in the right spot, too. I can't believe Buffalo played right into our hands, though. They know we struggle to get the ball downfield, and they still gave up huge yards twice on screens. Not sure how that happened.

In an interview after the game, one of the Bills defenders said that the two screens completely caught them by surprise. They've seen screens to Gio and to the TE's, but the Bengals haven't really ran a lot of screens to WR's, especially AJ. Said they didn't have any clue that the Bengals would run those plays, and had no real defense for them. They were expecting RB screens and TE screens.

And now that they're on tape, we can go back to watching our offense suck ass.

Glad we kept them special for that Buffalo game.

Maybe, but it does show that Gruden made some additions/changes to keep a defense off-balance. The key will be to continue to add plays, and mix and match.

I still think the bread-and-butter of this offense should be going up-tempo with both TE's on the field, Gio in the backfield, and Green plus Jones/Sanu opposite...

This will allow the offense to keep a defensive package on the field and dictate to them what to run. Double TE, can run, or split them out and exploit size/speed with TE, can force 1-1 with Jones/Sanu or even Green. Gives a lot of space to Gio in the middle of the field...

The personell they have screams to be ran uptempo and dictate to the defense...Hopefully, this is something they will be working on as the season progresses.

It's common knowledge that Dalton was ahead of the curve coming in as a rookie, so looking at his stats in his first couple of seasons compared to other QB's in their first couple of seasons to try to make a case for Dalton is disingenuous at best.

I agree that it's not all that useful. I think it's even less useful given the way college qbs are trained these days. I don't have any hard data on it, but it seems they come out of college with less mechanical issues and more understanding of offense and game management.

It would probably be interesting to quantify a qbs slope from season 1 to season 3 or 4. How much did they improve?

We knew when he was drafted that he had a higher floor than a lot of rookie QBs, but that he had a lower ceiling as well.

I just think that rookie QB's are more prepared also, but you can still look at most 2nd year QB's and notice that they are struggling just like Dalton did to a degree. Kaepernick, RGIII.

Russell Wilson and Luck seem to be ahead of the curve a bit, but Luck has had his moments too and so has Wilson.

Newton has thrown for tons of yards, but also INT's and has not helped his team win games as much as they thought he would.

Dalton has flaws, not all are incorrectable. With that said, I think Dalton is about middle of the pack when it comes to QB struggles early in career in regards to years 2 and 3. However, he has the potential to get better and become better at pocket awareness, to get better at just saying well, this play is dead, throw it away, and live for another day. He can improve footwork and play with more urgency, and maybe even be a little more in your face kind of leader.

I like the fact he got up in Griden's face the other day and pleaded his case instead of just sitting back and taking it and saying, okay boss. He is getting that passion and that fire, and he is starting to stand up for himself, and I think that will go a long ways in building character and respect from his teammates.

Once that is completely soldified, he will be able to help elevate other guys games a little bit, because they will give Dalton everything they have, just like they used to do for Boomer. Still yet to be determined, but I think he is on his way to a degree.

The lack of pocket awareness was exposed on two of the three sacks, sacks that shouldn't have happened. He had time to throw the ball away, yet froze and just waited for the rusher to arrive. Probably half his sacks this year have been like that.

Can't throw it away if you are in the pocket.

It's obvious you didn't watch the game last night. Wilson threw it away multiple times from inside the pocket. He threw it at their feet, over their heads out of bounds. He is smart enough to know he needs to throw it away rather than take a sack.

And if wager more than half the sacks are on Dandy.

And you know Dalton has more career INTs than Newton right? He also has more INTs than Newton this year. And if Newton was on Cincy, this team is a LEGIT Super Bowl contender. People would be extremely afraid of our offense.

I usually just get blocked by the athlete, didn't think they would suspend it. All his and your followers who support him must have reported you for spam, i'd be pissed.

You can, as long as it's in the vacinity of an eligible pass-catcher.

I will say that the last sack Andy took against Buff, I think it was a CB/Safety blitz...the line didn't shift to cover the extra guy, and he came without anyone touching him. What I was surprised at was that he blitzed from Andy's right side, where he was facing...yet Andy had no indication of a guy blitzing from that side...his vision side. That is troublesome.

Dalton's numbers are inflated due to the short passes being called by Gruden and the receivers picking up yards after the catch. But as soon as opposing defenses realize that we're not throwing the ball down the field then they'll start crowding the line of scrimmage and jumping the short routes and his turnovers will spike. The Coaching staff is not doing him or the team any favors by not allowing him to throw down the field. Sooner of later we have to figure out if he's capable of reading through his progressions and throwing the deep ball or if he needs to be replaced by a more capable quarterback.

Go back and look at some games from the last three years, and you will see Andy's tendency to freeze in just the situation you spoke of. He almost always has time to get rid of the ball but he almost never does. Now that is something that can be improved upon easily, yet he's shown no signs of improvement in this area up to now. Just throw it away, Andy.
