Critical Updates for Windows

I have had a similar issue in the past and it was my antivirus program not letting Windows update. Don't know if that could be it but figured I would mention it?

Sounds like you have a virus, better break it down and clean your motherboard

You have windows 7 or 8 or what? You might try to make sure hardware is updated, like your chipset, video, etc.

Going need a sticky, saying give needed details if you have a problem, if it is with a printer, what model, if it is with updates, what OS, etc.

Kind of need more info than that. Does it freeze up during an install attempt, or before you can do anything? If you are able to open the update window before it freezes can you click on the history link and see if there are specific updates that have failed?

Kind of need to know when it freezes before I can say where to start to troubleshoot it. You could have conflicts or system corruption or it could be something else.

You might end up looking to see if you have any kind of critical errors in the event logs, but one thing you can do for now is run system file checker.

Click on Start > All programs> Accessories > and right click over Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator.

Type in sfc /scannow and press enter.

If it finds any type of system file corruption or inconsistency it will attempt to correct it automatically. If it says it did find problems and corrected them they try rebooting and going into it again.

Again, this is just a general thing as we don't have enough information about your update problem to be more specific.

Another question would be: When was the last time your computer successfully completed a windows update? If it was within the last few weeks have you tried to do a system restore to before that update?

I have faced several computers with issues doing windows updates, but most of them are due to failed updates. Normally looking in the update history and looking up the error codes for failed updates and following the suggestions for clearing that error up fixes it.

October, same time I had installed Norton Anti virus.

I have bitdefender now and it has a prompt to download the updates but it just freezes up.
Computer runs fine now even though the updates haven't installed

If you do a search on Bitdefender and Windows updates you will find all kinds of problems for Bitdefender. Try disabling or if you have to uninstalling Bitdefender and then try doing the Windows updates again. It you are using 64 bit Windows 7 or 8 be aware that Bitdefender has crippled some installations of Windows entirely.
