This is where Shero has a big decision to make. Trade or not to trade? Because if Sid isn't going to be back, with time to ramp it up, for the playoffs, then keep your assets and call it a season. However, this team WITH Sid still has a legitimate shot. And, in discussing Geno's injury with one of my profs, if he works hard and rehabs well, and deals with surgery well, he COULD be back in 4 months...it's possible. But even then...we'd have to make the Cup finals basically.

Pens need scoring help and they need it now. Don't know if the Avs would be sellers, but Hedjuk would provide that. Fisher is still a good option down the middle.

Is this because of his concussion or is that just when his family vacation ends?

Pens needs to call it a season, though I would love for them to try and make some moves only to fall flat on their face like the Devils did last season.

Shero will make a deal, probably more than one. Obviously, it sucks losing Malkin. At the same time, this provides an opportunity for Staal to play as a top six forward for the remainder of the regular season.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Shero go and acquire a top six winger with the money that will be freed up with Geno on the extended IR.

All of this hinges on a healthy return of Sid, obviously... but the Pens have held up better than anyone would have predicted since he's been out. Their defense is still stout, and they have been getting pretty good production out of the 3rd and 4th line forwards.

They are far from being written off. They have the 3rd best record in the NHL.

My gut says that Shero will deal as well...but my point in my previous post was this: if we're not certain of when (and at what caliber) Sid will return, is it worth the risk to dump assets? Obviously the money is not an issue, and now we have plenty of cap space to make moves happen, but it's more the asset value that could hurt. Just how much is he willing to part with if we know that we could go into the post season with a 'so-so' Sid and no Geno. This team has the ability to play well in the postseason where they are right now because of a few things: MAF, the PK, and our D. But, as showcased yesterday, we need some scoring too. So, yes a trade makes sense, but a trade won't replace Geno. It's tough. But as I stated earlier, my gut says he'll deal (mostly because he basically said he's dealing).

There don't seem to be many big time players available right now. Kovalev would be a low risk high reward trade. He would also probably only cost at most a 3rd round pick. Giving up more wouldn't make sense. He also has a no trade clause. So he can simply tell Murray Pittsburgh or bust.

That's real bad news for the Pens. I wouldn't be surprised to see Shero try to make a deal.

It's worth it, IMO. If the team was sitting lower in the standings in the EC I could see what you're saying having a greater impact on a decision like that. But, I believe Shero has already built this team to win the in playoffs... yes, even with Geno being sidelined.

The core of the team is still healthy(sans Crosby). The defensive group that Ray put together this season is remarkable. And, Fleury is having his best season as a professional NHL'er. Those two components will create success in the PS.

Ray will make a move, probably more than one. They will have to take a hit either in the draft, and/or the top, and minor league roster. It will be worth it.

The Pens have A TON of free agent forwards at the end of 10/11. 7UFA's, and 2 RFA. If he makes a move that brings in a contract longer than this season, he has flexibility to work it into next season.

The most important part of the team, Centers-Blue Line-Goal, are locked up long term.

There are a couple that could interest Ray.

Kovalev is one, Cory Stillman, Radek Dvorak, Chris Higgins, Milan Hejduk and Radim Vrbata are all players that the Post-Gazette beat writer for the Penguins listed as possibilities.

I really hope the Avs don't trade Hejduk to the Pens. Granted it would probably help my fantasy team but Hejduk & Crosby would be sick.

Hejduk would be a guy at the top of my list. UFA in 2011, and the Avs are currently on the outside looking in for the 2011 post-season.

shit. I'm calling it. Crosby is done for the season. Shero needs to play the worst case scenario. make something happen now.

If Sid were done for the year, I actually hope Ray wouldn't do a whole lot. Unless it were to bring in forwards with more than one year remaining on a contract.

No need for rentals if Crosby isn't skating.
