I hope Brock Nelson wasn't a big part of that Cup victory...

If my team held me out an entire season I'd be looking for a way out in any way shape or form.

I heard they offered him a 6 year deal prior to this 2 year deal. Garth has a tendency to be tight lipped about stuff like this. I hope he signs before Thursday. In the event that he doesn't, they have some depth.

It's just ridiculous to self-impose a deadline 4 months before it's needed.

They've done it with past players too. It's annoying because after they've done that to those players, they left the first chance they could get. It's a Charles Wang rule, which maybe means, with the new owners, won't be imposed??

I have no idea but I do know that Brock has zero leverage here. His agent is claiming the offer was 'half' Brock's value. I mean, if they are only offering a 2 year, $3M deal, then yes, that's about half. He's probably worth a 2 year $7M deal.

Of course Brock has zero leverage because the RFA system as currently constituted is totally fucked and is built so undeserving older guys get massively overvalued contracts because they've "earned their UFA status" and teams need to make the cap floor.

Meanwhile guys who are younger and actually entering what is statistically proven to be their prime are forced into so-called "bridge contracts" which are in reality a form of collusion amongst the owners of the league to underpay those who deserve big contracts so their dumb GM's can keep giving Dave Bolland $6 million and Dion Phaneuf $7 million and Ryan Kesler $7 million.

Fair enough. Take away the RFA structure.....what's Brock worth?

If we're thinking short, and all of him his agent and the Isles would be regardless because none probably think he's reached his peak yet (and in the Isles' case he may regress), $9 mil over 2 or $15 mil over 3 seems more than fair to all.

Okay - follow up question. If you're the Isles, would you rather pay Frans Nielsen or Brock that $5M per? Or maybe save a million per year for Okposo? There's a reason this is being dragged out.

I guess my point is, they have a lot of contracts coming up and I'm sure they are trying to do their best to be smart about it so they can afford $10M a year for JT.....

I like Frans, but Nelson's ceiling is higher. Nelson.

As for Okposo, I have no idea how to handle that one. My guess is JT gets pissed if they suddenly decide to jettison his high-scoring linemate for the second time in 3 years.

I have a feeling negotiations will heat up during the season depending on how Okposo plays. He's a streaky guy but a total team player. I'd hate to lose him over $500K/$1M extra per year. I think the eye situation worries them a bit, as it should. Those are freaky injuries.

What's even more amazing is that he's still an RFA when this deal expires. Only bad news is that this deal expires when JT's does.

You're kidding right? It's perfect timing. Grabovski, Halak, Kulieman, Bailey & Clutterbuck will be UFA's as well. Nelson & Hickey's contracts will be up as well. The Islanders are going to have 29,950,000 off the books in 3 years. If Tavares leaves it won't be because of money.
