this is a bit of a side... but I never understood why professional football players are still sorted by their colleges...

like the list above... who cares where they went to school...

and when players do their introductions, how they all say what school they are from... I know I don't care... sure, I am not a college football fan... but I just don't get why there is this lore to it, even after they graduate...

I mean, most of us went to college... how many times a week do you tell people you went to so and so college?? and how many times do you have to repeat it??

Well if it makes you feel any better I'm sure it will stop soon because of all the stupid transfers and other bullshit that college football allows them to do now. They'll all have to list 4 different schools in the intro. "I went to Alabama, but didn't win the job, so I transferred to Michigan State, but they said I'd have to compete to start there, so I transferred to Virginia Tech and played there for a year, but they weren't that good, so I transferred to Vanderbilt, but holy shit they are serious about their academics there, so I transferred to Louisiana Tech where they offered me an NIL deal of a bucket of crawfish and a pot of gumbo so I jumped all over that which is how I was able to make the move from edge rusher to interior defensive lineman my senior year."

I know it seems weird, but always felt like Dickerson was always underappreciated in these lists. Everyone knew. Dickerson is getting the ball & all he did anyways was get yards. Not gonna look it up but didnt he avg. like 4.4 yds with like 11 in the box LOL

but a pretty solid list.
We would have to split hairs to make changes.

Judging by the Twitter handle of 'biggameboomer', my guess is it was the result of a discussion about which college has produced the most great NFL RB's .. or something similar... making listing the schools, pretty relevant.

In a vacuum, no didn't make much sense, but given context it probably makes perfect sense.
A lot people care where they played college ball at.

But like Bandit said, those days are likely coming to an end. So many college stars have 2,3, 4 teams on thier resumes, that kind of loyalty to following their careers won't be there in the same way

Great stuff... and out of all 50, the only one I find any issue with at all is Faulk behind Bettis.

Faulk and Allen both need to move up 2 spots IMO. Also because of short careers, I would probably move Sayers up 2 spots. IMO he Sayers has to be ahead of Campbell.

anyway the list is not great at the end... a bunch of not should be in the top 100 RBs...

And a snub of McCafftey... I wouldn't mind it, if others were not on the list...

I think Lions fans might answer this differently than say a Packers, Steelers, Patriots, Cowboys fan might.

You can take Dorsett and give Dallas another title, they'd still have Emmit, but they've already got what, 5, 6 Lombardi's? So, why.

Maybe a Lions fan would gladly lose Megatron too say they've got one

Jets might only have one dude who transcended the typical 'legend' status in Nameth, but any true NFL fan knows that Curtis Martin, Mark Gastineau, and Joe Klecko are true 'all time greats' of the game.. probably even more so than Joe was tbh.

Chicago has had some iconic players... Butkus, Sayers, Sweetness, Ditka... their legendary status may be more valuable than a title.

Even championship titles fade.... players' lore seem to last longer.... After all, they show highlights of Payton running guys over, they dont show highlights of the Bears of the 50's winning titles. Or even the 85 Bears destroying QBs.

Legendary players are definitely more valuable than past championships.

Like if you were to swap one for one.

A sb that’s not experienced is not very valuable. But i would absolutely trade any past player for future success.

A sb that’s not experienced is not very valuable. But i would absolutely trade any past player for future success.

Different sport, but Embiid is going to be a legendary Sixer even though he's always going to be too hurt by the end of the year to win a championship. I'll still enjoy him.

Iverson too. Never won it, but a true legend we can always know we got to see.

It's a tough call, but I think I would take the championship over Dan Marino's legacy. Sorry Dan but the Dolphins haven't won the Super Bowl in my lifetime so sucks being you.

there's a lot of give and take here - championships are a huge boost to a pro athlete building their legendary status. This might not be a great example, but people don't continue to buy cars from John Elway car dealership if he doesn't have a double SB winning swan song on his way out the door. He doesn't get the front office job without those SB rings. Bronco fans would still love the guy, but they wouldn't still be celebrating him 25yrs later without those titles, it would just be fond memories that any of them would trade in an instant for a future SB victory.
