I am irrationally annoyed at how great a contract this is for both Toronto and AM.

I'm also a little annoyed that the former GM of the Flames signed multiple guys to long contracts that will be very tough/impossible to move and then joins a new team and signs one of the top players in the league to a great contract.

Great?

Great are the d(st)eals that Bergeron, Stamkos, Ovie have signed in the past. For me, this is a fair deal BUT I think there will be trouble down the road. Nylander isnt signed and Marner will want AM34 money. I can see where they will be right back in the same mess in a couple of years. I know, an eternity from now LOL

Still think one of the Core 4 has to go, plus they need a youngster or two to overperform their contracts. Knies is the next one on that list, but the Leafs track record lately has not been great.

The great part is the four year length because the dollar amount was always going to be high. But overall, I'm okay with downgrading it to good or fair lol.

I think it's fair market, give or take a little. I'd say it's good for the Leafs in that it ends when he's 31, with likely only a couple more prime years left.

I agree that they could easily end up in the same top-heavy situation they've been flirting with/struggling with the last few years. Probably depend on how much the cap jumps.

LOL

Seriously, I wasnt thinking about the length. I know the consensus view is that any athlete in any sport regresses after 30. Not so sure that is true of elite-level hockey players though. From memory, I would be very happy with a 31 year old Gretzky, Crosby, Ovie, Dionne, Lemieux, etc. That would be an interesting analysis, to look just at elite-level players and see when their dropoff begins.

Whether Matthews is elite though is another discussion, though.

More I think about it, there are some intangibles that provide benefits to the team and maybe does deserve Great status. the sideshow that would have transpired if he had not signed would be a huge distraction. So that is worth something too.

(I really only responded so that BBB would correct me lol)

Those are steals but Matthews could’ve commanded $15 mil on the market so I’ll take it at $13.5m. I don’t think there is any chance any of the upcoming UFA’s are taking much less than market value and that’s fine. They’ll likely have to either trade Marner to keep Nylander or let Nylander walk (they should have decided this by now but who knows wtf’s going on) but that’s life in the cap world.

Far as Matthews goes he’s pretty effective in his own end and also pretty much averages 50 goals. If he sticks near that standard we’re good, it’s just everything else that has to click.

Is there any trade protection in the new contract?
Probably but just hasn’t come to light yet. Doubt it’s anything less than full NMC.

Chrome still appears to embed tweets correctly since the change to 'X'.
My chrome app on the iPhone doesn’t. The only way I can get them to go is pasting the link and replacing the X with Twitter

But why gif?

Avoid lame duck label. Kind of have to do it if you’re going to keep him this season, doesn’t mean anything in the scheme of things - even if they fired him the Pens will just hire him right after (and also who cares about MLSE’s money lol).

Agreed. As I like to say it's only money...and none of it's mine

He's a really good coach. He's taken a very flawed (Dubas-induced) roster and had them playing really good, structured hockey. He is not the problem in Toronto.
