Francis is... I mean...

Pot's legal in Washington, right? Dude's gotta be smoking the good stuff. If he chose a UFA minor league D man from us without a side deal... yikes.
I can understand it. They went heavy on D from other teams. Appleton and Jarnkrok give them some good middle six center options.

I understand Beyreuther much less.

so if Seattle takes a UFA, they are still under no real obligation to sign him, right?
it's could be effectively a "pass" to keep the cap space.

I'm trying to think of why this had to happen like this with the leaks. The league made them turn the list in this morning, and from what I understand are trying to get as many of the selected players as possible to Seattle for the draft. If they had just left the players at home and done a read out with some added effect for drama I'm guessing the list could've been submitted at the time of the draft and the picks wouldn't have been leaked, right?

So by the logic of that commentary it was to trade for McCann to protect Kerfoot. Not that I have had glowing praise for McCann but he is cheaper and younger than Kerfoot and would actually be a nice change for the Leafs. But I guess Dubas really, really likes the status quo?
Or is Kerfoot entrenched as the 3rd line center? If so that makes sense because McCann would never be that.

It was that or to have a backup plan in case Kerfoot was indeed selected.

But the entire reason for having that problem to begin with is because they protected Holl, which is crazy because he's very replaceable.

The only rationale I can think of is that they think a Holl replacement would cost more than the $2 million he makes, although 1) they should be able to find a decent stay-at-home guy for less than $3 mil (just off the top of my head, Vatanen or Montour would probably fit in just fine next to Muzzin), and 2) I'm not sure why Dermott can't be the in-house replacement (they're very similar and Dermott plays RD frequently) considering they were gonna be stuck with him regardless (he and Hakstol didn't get along apparently). And to boot they're now down a decent prospect in Hallander.

It's very minimal in the grand scheme of things but they needed McCann more than they needed Holl, is the short of it. The help on offence they need is going to cost them more than the $3 mil McCann would cost this season and they now have one less asset with which to accomplish it.

As a wrestling fan. This could be smack dab outta the WWE Playbook.

These could be diversion from the real thing to find out leakers in the system.

You are giving NHL execs way too much credit to think they have the brainpower of WWE people to deceive this hard.
