Since 2009 the Oilers have drafted 10th, 1st, 1st, 1st, 7th & 3rd overall. They should be contending for a playoff spot by now at the very least. Not only do they fail on draft day, but their player development department doesn't seem to be getting the job done.
Thing is, they haven't exactly failed on draft day unless you're referring to the later rounds. Their first rounders have been pretty solid, they just haven't filled in the roster with complementary and depth players. The Blackhawks' first rounders during their 6 year playoff drought were pretty rank (think Cam Barker at 3rd overall and Jack Skille 7th) but they drafted well in the later rounds and signed guys to fill out the roster.
The only pick I really fault them for is Yakupov, and that's only because Murray was available, was the player they needed and Yakupov was the same player (well, theoretically) as guys they already had on the roster. I mean, can you imagine if they had traded down and made moves to take both Murray and Rielly? Would anybody in Edmonton be complaining if they knew in a year they were going to have two of the best young defencemen in the game?
