Somebody else did the analysis, but I think it supports the point that the Oilers should seriously look at seeing what they could get for Draisaitl (i.e. cashing in when his stock is high):

62% of Leon's ice time this year has been with McDavid, so although he can play center, he's definitely played the majority of this season as a winger.

With McDavid
35-43-78
4.46 Points / 60

Without McDavid
8-9-17
1.589 Points / 60

Ouch. If you can get two good wingers or a winger and a D for Drai I think you need to go for it.

Or swing for the fences.

Draisatl to NSH for PK Subban?

This doesn't look great but there's a bit of perspective needed. I looked at NST for 5v5 info and they have the following:

With McDavid
16-21-37

Without McDavid
6-7-13

His 5v5 ice time is about a perfect 60-40 split with/without McDavid. By his production rate 5v5 with McDavid, he should have about 23 5v5 points without him which means he's 10 points short of where he'd ideally be production-wise.

Is that concerning? You'd want it to be higher, after all you're playing against most of your minutes against a team's second pairing if you aren't skating with #97, but just like skating with #97 is an inflator to his stats you can't jump to a conclusion without factoring in that after McDavid and Chiasson his most common linemates are Rieder, Kassian and Lucic who combined have 53 points on the season.

Finally, how does McDavid do 5v5 without Drai? Of his 21-36-57, only 6-11-17 have come skating alongside anyone else. That becomes a little more surprising when you factor in that the next forward he spends the most time with is RNH. His 5v5 P/60 drops from 3.40 to 1.89 away from Draisaitl, compared to 3.15 and 1.66 for Draisaitl away from McDavid. The differences aren't as glaring when you exclude the power play production.

To me it seems far more like rather than one player being nearly entirely ineffectual without the other, they benefit from each other's presence and the team would probably be even worse off if Drai weren't around.

FWIW, based on the above I would 110% trade Subban for Draisaitl if I'm Nashville but I'm pretty sure Subban has a NTC now and wouldn't waive it for Edmonton. Nashville will just dig another perfect d-man out of Latvia or Turkmenistan or wherever the hell they find these guys anyway so no big loss.
