Severson's rep among Devils fans seems to be similar to Jake Gardiner's rep among Leaf fans, which was like Dougie Hamilton's rep among Flames fans. None of those players have really had any success as defensive stalwarts despite analytics guys telling us consistently they're among the best defensive d-men in the league.

He's also a 30 year old defenceman and those analytic darling skills almost always start regressing around that age.

It's more about near-term for them after signing Gaudreau but even if they still add Hayes and get solid goaltending and improvement from the young players...it's still a bit of a jumble for me.

I'm kind of lost as to why they wouldn't just blow Gavrikov out of the water with a big paying deal, especially if he was fine signing short term, instead of going this route. If $7m x 2 would've kept Gavrikov there and saved them a 2nd rounder, a 3rd rounder, $5 mil in cap space and a long term contract I think that would've been the smart move

I understand they are putting the final touches on the deal to make Niklas Backstrom goalie coach.

Happy for that, he played a key role in Korpusalos development and he was the one who found both Elvis an Matiss. He also coached Tarasov and Anton Forsberg along the way. Hes got a good eye. And most importantly for goaltending, he is Finnish.

As bizarre as this sounds, over my hockey tv is a signed Olivier stick. Practice-used on a HFC night. Purple tape and everything. We love The Biloxi Bull in our house.
