Jack Del Rio is not the only AFC South coach losing his job today. The Indianapolis Colts have announced that they fired defensive coordinator Larry Coyer.
In a statement released by the team, Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said, “The move was made to improve communication and production.”
“We feel this is the most effective and realistic way to move forward and win games this season,” Caldwell added. “We appreciate all of the effort and hard work Larry Coyer put forth in his three years with the Colts.”
Colts linebackers coach Mike Murphy has been assigned to the defensive coordinator position. Murphy is in his 14th season with the Colts.
It’s not at all surprising that heads would roll in Indianapolis, considering that the Colts are by far the worst team in the league. But the timing of the move is strange, as is the decision to single out Coyer when everyone in Indianapolis should be on the hottest of hot seats after this debacle of a season.
Coyer is the first to go, but it seems safe to say he’ll be far from the only one who loses his job with the Colts in the weeks ahead.
Caldwell next?
