First and foremost, Welcome, welcome, welcome to the board! This is getting out of hand. The ACC would soon follow the PAC-12 if that were to happen.
I’m not concerned about regional rivalries/identities staying relevant, but conferences disappearing is not something that I am a fan of. If you don’t have an ACC and Pac12, that means an automatic bid is going to a lesser conference from the G5. That, I’m not a fan of, and the whole super conference thing where the Big10 and SEC are loaded down either.First and foremost, Welcome, welcome, welcome to the board!
Now about your post... Although opinions vary, this shift seemed inevitable once the SC ruled in 2021 (NCAA v. Alston) in favor of the athletes using their names, images, and likenesses for profit. I understand the argument that there will be changes, especially when it comes to long-standing traditions, smaller schools perhaps being lost or left out in the shuffle, and a temporary unevenness in competitive balances.
That said, the countering argument tells us that regional identity won't be lost, and best of all, nobody in these new Power 5 conferences will be left out of the championship pursuit. This realignment will keep 72 teams, (55% of the FBS) involved in the national championship chase. That percentage increases as the number of playoff spots grows, for example, this year, the playoff will expand from 4 a year ago, (Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama) to 12 in various traditional Bowls. The setup is as follows.
The field will include the five highest-ranked conference champions (with automatic bids) and the seven highest-ranked remaining teams. The top four teams will receive a first-round bye to the quarterfinals, while seeds 5-12 will play each other in the first round The semi-finals will rotate between Bowls, and the CFB Championship will take place in Atlanta GA..
Change happens, and it's not out of the ordinary that there's going to be people who both don't agree with it and don't like it.I’m not concerned about regional rivalries/identities staying relevant, but conferences disappearing is not something that I am a fan of. I’m not saying I disagree with players getting paid. I do think that it was a necessary change, but I also think the transfer portal should be limited, and I also think you need to cap what a player can earn. Some QBs are making seven figures on NIL, and that’s nuts.Change happens, and it's not out of the ordinary that there's going to be people who both don't agree with it and don't like it.
The die is cast because what previously took place was unsustainable as people became more aware of the circumstances. Like the cell phone, the question becomes one of complete acceptance over time. I know that new feels uncomfortable, but let's see how much better or worse it actually is in time.

I am glad that NIL is able to help athletes in other sports. A friend of mine does marketing for a large Papa John’s franchisee- about 80 stores- and he’s been able to sign some University of Delaware athletes to NIL deals. Those are the kind of athletes who I think should be getting those things. Football players, absolutely, yes, but not to this level. But we’re not putting it back in the box at this point.
I’m also biased because I am also a Navy sports fan, and not only is it impossible for Navy’s athletes to get NIL, but its also quite impossible for their football players to be allowed to pursue a professional sports career. It’s an exception made in very few instances for NFL, and they did not make the exception for Noah Song in MLB and he had to basically take two years off from the sport before he came back to the minor leagues.
They are all millionaires they don't care
