This article covering that the Trump White House was not as forthcoming as possible, lied, and potentially caused hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths kinda gets filed in the "No Shit" drawer. It brought to mind this question for me...

Did Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx do a great service to the nation in their leadership during the pandemic (ie - their replacements would have been party loyalists anyway)? Or are both cowards who didn't speak truth to power when they knew government leaders were trying to hide information from the public and not properly prepare our country for the pandemic?

As time goes on given that they both had considerable wealth, I lean towards the latter. I think both were somewhat complicit.

Curious to hear thoughts...

Well, Dr. Birx definitely could have done more to stand up to Trump but she was clearly intimidated by him and his cronies. That said, I don't think anybody was holding a gun to her head to appear on Fox News and spew platitudes about the good job Trump was doing.

As for Dr. Fauci, I think he objected and spoke up to criticize Trump as much as could be expected. Let's not forget that the Trump administration banned him from doing interviews to keep him silent. Also, he had to arrange for extra security for not only himself but his family as the death threats started to swirl. I think he did about as much as he could do without getting fired (and in a sense, he was fired as they did silence him and brought in Dr. Scott Atlas who will go down in history as the doctor who recommended to swing the doors open and let COVID-19 wash all over the country).

Brix was a total fucking patsy.

I could be wrong, but I get the sense Fauci was trying to get the truth through as much as he could.
- yes, he initially said masks were not required for general population. fair explanation was that at the very beginning when there were PPE shortages, they wanted to make sure there was enough to go around for the front line medical workers. Completely understandable when you see up here people were selling cases of N95 masks out of the trunks of their cars.
- once they saw that the spread in population was significant, he changed his tune to wear a mask whenever possible.
- he has always been pro science and pro vaccine.
- he had "corrected" trump a few times at the pressers, then got muzzled.
- left when it became clear his ability to influence was completely stifled.

that's just my impression.

He never left though, he just stuck around and tried to tiptoe around Trump's shit. I guess the heat he gets is that he either should've kept doing press and contradicting Trump or just resigned and ripped the Administration's approach on the way out.

I don't really know if it would've helped much either way. I do think that regardless of what he did or didn't do and whether that's right or wrong it might be a good idea to get a new voice and a new mind in there to take over.

Yeah, I understand what Dash and Puck are saying. I don't think the advice on masks in the early going was off, there were different priorities. And I think he did go up to the line as much as he could. I'm more talking about the bold part that BBB brings up.

Fauci has plenty of wealth to live out his remaining years. And early in the pandemic his voice was a loud as the President and not under death threats or viewed unpopularly. I just think instead of being okay being muzzled he could have quit and been on the news every night. Maybe that's a hard call in his position (i get that), but when you have the luxury of economic security and you know lives are going to be lost, I think you have some responsibility to not be a part of that administration.

Now he wasn't as complicit as Birx. I agree. She regrets what she did and she should. But Fauci also didn't come out and say - they don't want to report testing, they aren't sharing what they now, scientific thought is being repressed.

I don't think he's a villain. I just don't think he's a hero and could have done more in his position... or more accurately, out of his position. But its not an easy position to be in.

Ideally, you have a President who isn't a sociopath and cares more about 100,000s of people not dying than his own re-election, so you don't have this situation in the first place.

These things didn't need to be in conflict with one another. Trump is probably the only politician on earth who saw absolutely no bump in popularity whatsoever as a result of the pandemic. If he had taken it seriously from day one he wins re-election pretty easily IMO, even with all the other shit (he was 50-50 to win it even with the other shit).

It was some of the worst leadership in the history of governance and it's actually insane to recall even this short time after.
