The idea of drafting a TE doesn't feel quite right because I don't see TE as a position of need. That said, I would love to have this kid in a 49er uniform next season.

Let's say Fleener is the next Gronk/Graham. We can fit such a TE into our offense, even with Vernon and Walker.

Don't think its likely he'd be valued over a WR at that time, but if that's the case I could live with the selection.

Any TE we would draft will be a receiving threat. As long as we land a true#1 WR in FA we could get away with carrying 5 WR (incl return specialist) 4 TE's 8 OL 3 RB 3 QB and 1 FB. That gives us a grand total of 24 offensive players. This would help keep defensive players out of the offense which can't be the ideal way to go. Mixing in Sopoaga is fine, but when Justin Smith comes over in short yardage situations that's a problem.

This is not the ideal. Ideally after this year I'd want 6 WR's and 3 TE's but if this is the way it shakes out and we add an upgrade over DW I'd be okay assuming we landed a true #1 WR in FA. DW beats out most 6th WR's. One roster spot on this team will include a blocking TE specialist no matter which way we go.

The fact that those guys entered the league so close together, along with guys like Petigrew, Gresham, Finley and Herndandez I think it's safe to say that the athletic TE is going to become fairly common.

To say "what if he's the next Gronk/Graham" is a little ridiculous. Those are the two best TEs in the league right now. At the 30th pick, I think if we could get a guy who will dominate his position the way Gronk and Graham do at any position that isn't Special Teams we draft him.

What if he's the next Jermaine Gresham though? How about Brandon Petigrew?

I'm okay with adding a TE, but not in the first round unless it's an obvious decision (grades out well above other prospects).

I've read a few things saying the LSU TE at the Sr Bowl is really athletic, anyone know any more? I haven't been following the Sr or Shrine games because there were more important games on. Finally.

Like I said in another thread: I think the guy from Clemson will eventually be a better TE than Fleener. Better blocker; more athletic.

I'd rather have a guy like Konz, Glenn, Floyd, Ingram, Perry, a few of the CBs, Thompson, Worthy...

But I'd love to have another TE who gives defenses fits. I wanted Graham back in the '10 draft (but I'm happy with Bowman).

Glad to see you've come around on Ingram. Welcome to the club, my friend. LOL

Reading the Sr. Bowl thread I see that he's losing steam as an olb, they are saying that he's looking like a dominate 5 technique. They're saying his game on the inside is what he should focus on.

I think he's going to be one of those players that lineup all over the place, de, dt, olb, ilb and fb.

Oh I was never AGINST drafting Ingram. I've just seen enough of him to say I'd rather have him than a 2nd TE simply because a pass rusher is so valuable.

I'm still undecided as to how I'd rank him against players I have ranked higher than the TEs in this draft class.

I agree here, i like the kid but at #30? Idk.

Maybe Harbs might wanna get him, as to not pass on another stanford guy who he knows can play the game(R. Johnson over D. Baldwin). Also with Walker being a free agent next yr and possibly looking to maybe go somewhere else could factor into it.

But i dont really see them getting him at 30. What round is he projected anyways?

if he's the clear BPA at #30, i'll be fine with it too, cause we should lean maximum talent in round 1. under this scenario we don't HAVE to keep both Davis and Walker along with Fleener? whether one leaves next season, the one after, or the one after that, they're always changes.

i assume Fleener is better at getting open on short and medium routes? ie having the feel and ability to get open for typical TE routes? if he can only get open by sprinting downfield - ala Vernon - this wouldn't make sense?
