By the time we draft at #30, if the BPA is Coby Fleener, should we draft him?

Do you think a 3 TE set of Vernon, Fleener and Walker is viable in the NFL? Could it be the next evolution of the offense?

Fleener also gives us a nice big red zone target, a la Jimmy Graham. He runs alot of intermediate to deep post routes in college so he does go deep.

Also if we do line up in a 3 TE set and the opposing defense comes out in a nickel or dime package we should be able to run real effectively in that matchup.

What is Fleener's speed, 4.5 or 4.6?

How is his blocking & protection?

I've read his blocking is decent.

Just me, but TE should be far away from a consideration IMO in the first rd. 2nd rd, perhaps too.

We're talking about adding a 3rd TE, not a starting TE or 2nd option, but a 3rd for our first pick?

Can't agree with that call.

to me, adding a guy like fleener is just like adding a WR. look at what the pats did. it's the future of the nfl...create matchup problems for the D by playing very versatile players. Walker could very well play the Hernandez type role and get a few handoffs here and there to throw off the D. Vernon obviously creates matchup problems going deep. and then with Fleener...I see him like a Colston type. He's probably faster than Colston and he's also bigger. With 3 TEs we put in the D in the predicament of either going with a base D and risk our guys burning them with the pass...or they go with a nickel formation and we run them over. I would really like this pick IMO.

And for all you guys out there that really want Colston...remember that he was projected as a TE coming out of college due to his size, hands, and lack of speed. I'm not saying we convert Fleener to purely a WR but rather keep his versatility and use him like a Colston in the passing game. With those 3 TEs all we would need are a few quick possession WRs (K Williams, Dotavia???, Morgan). Fleener and Davis will stretch the field enough.

Fleener is a tweener. :-) (between WR and TE).
Vernon and Walker have WR speed as well.

So having 3 guys out there that can play TE or split out as a WR could be a great offense.

Fleener may be BPA when we draft.

This is the guy Ive been saying I wanted for weeks now plus he's a Harbaugh guy. If were letting Peele play we have no choice but to draft Fleener we need our best guys on the field at one time. To me there isnt any reaching in the draft anymore if you like a guy take him because you never know how how he will turn out.

I also believe that the Giants would grab this guy in a jiffy if he was there when they draft.
So we can screw the Giants by grabbing him 1 or 2 slots ahead of them.

Eli needs a stud TE, Giants TEs suck, and Fleener would nicely complement the 3 WRs they have.

We're getting Byham back from injury too who's an upgrade over Peele as a blocking TE.

It would be VD, Fleener, DW, and Byham and we could be very creative with packages.

I would cut Byham. I think carrying 4 TEs is overkill, and I think having 4 TEs active i ridiculous. When we wanted the "blocking TE" this year we went with Rachal or Boone. We aren't going to be throwing to our 4th TE, and as a backup, Byham isn't what we would have in Davis, Walker and Fleener.

I also have a feeling that Boone and Kilgore (good bye Rachal) would be better blocking options than Byham.

I am glad people are starting to come around on my way of thinking. A few months a go when I said I wanted Fleener people thought i was crazy for wanting another TE. He would make the middle of the field the niners. He would be the niners version of Gronk/Graham

Means 4 active TEs, means we are light at another position (presumably WR?).

Would you throw to Byham often?

who would cover him? it would be like staley running down the sidelines

If it would be like Staley running own the sideline, then anyone could cover him. He's not allowed to shove the guy to the ground. I wonder where a team could come up with a LB that could run with a tackle?

I like the idea. I wouldn't mind seeing Dwayne Allen or Fleener get picked up. I think either one would be an upgrade to Walker, plus Walker's deal will be up after next season anyways, and the experience will be valuable going forward.

The idea of drafting a TE doesn't feel quite right because I don't see TE as a position of need. That said, I would love to have this kid in a 49er uniform next season.
