We're getting toward the end, and I was going to list possible candidates from some major conferences around the country. Feel free to diss at will, and list your own. Most of my experience comes from watching SEC, but running a pickem group has led me to watch a bunch of games this year.

SEC: Miles and Saban (the usual suspects), Petrino (best O mind in conference), maybe Richt (great comeback run by UGA. Spurrier did a great job considering all that's happened, but Auburn, Auburn, Auburn. Dark Horse: Franklin from Vandy, who I think is hire for the year.

ACC: Swinney (you don't know how much that hurts to type), Beamer. I think Dabo is a shoo-in. Dark Horse: Mike London from UVA.

Pac-12: Chip Kelly (top 5 in nation), David Shaw. Dark Horse: Lane Kiffin (surprise!)

Big 12: I think Gundy would be a shoo-in, Stoops' loss to T-Tech is inexplicable, though OK has had some devastating injuries and kept motoring. Dark Horses: Snyder from K-state (done a lot with a little), Art Briles from Baylor.

Big 10: Man, a week ago I would have had to put Joe Pa as the frontrunner, but he's been ruled ineligible. Who does that leave? Mark Dantonio, Bret Bielema, Bo Pellini (ugh), Brady Hoke, maybe? I'm not sure there are any white horses here.

my interpretation of coach of the year is different than others, this is usually a coach that's managed to make the most improvement or done a lot with less.

SEC: Franklin, the fact that he has Vandypants one win away from bowl eligibility is amazing, even if he did have the benefit of 4 scrubs OOC and then playing Kentucky and Ole Mrs in conference.

ACC: Dabo Swinney easy, but London is close with Virginia

Pac-12: Chip Kelly, just because all the other coaches haven't done anything to do with improvements so just go with the guy that has dominated the conference.

Big 12: Bill Snyder, just came out of nowhere with Kansas State this year, to put it this way after week one I didn't even think they would be bowl eligible.

Big 10: Brady Hoke, with what he was given he's done a solid job, the struggle is dealing with having the most overrated quarterback in college football playing for him, so he can't take him out without getting bashed by the media.

Big East: Butch Jones, he has 7 wins with a team that only had 4 last year, bringing some of his players in to replace Brian Kelly's players who aren't very good.

MWC: Christianson with Wyoming he's done quite an amazing job, last year was a disaster 3 win season, then he loses his quarterback during the offseason, he ends up finding a new one and then is already bowl eligible.

CUSA: Pat Sumlin, with Houston he really has been helped by the presence of Keenum, really no one else stands out.

Mac: Ron English, what a job he's done at Eastern Michigan he has them bowl eligible with one more win either way 6 wins is a major accomplish for Eastern Michigan, can't tell you the last time they had that many.

Sun Belt: Mark Hudspeth, last year Louisiana Lafayette only won 3 games and was a bottom 10 team, this year Hudspeth has them with 8 wins, and looking at their first ever bowl bid.

Wac: Sonny Dykes, after 5 games into the season Louisiana Tech was 1-4 with the only win being an overtime win over Central Arkansas, but if you really looked at it they had a 2 point loss to Southern Mrs, one point loss to Houston and an overtime loss to Mrs State, only bad one was a blowout loss to Hawaii. Now they are on a 5 game winning streak that includes a 27-7 beatdown of Ole Mrs, now Louisiana Tech is bowl eligible.

If Michigan wins out, beating Nebraska and tOSU. Than Brady Hoke gets my vote in the B1G. I don't think you can make an argument against him. He's done a solid job and nobody expected him to.

I think he still wins it even if they lose both.

Why? That team went 7-5 with the worst defensive coordinator in the history of football. If Hoke brought in a great DC and could only manage 8-4, i'd consider that a pretty bad season. I think you have to go Bielema or Dantonio in the B1G if Michigan goes 0-2. If Michigan goes 1-1, Hoke joins them as candidates. If they go 2-0, Hoke is a lock.

LOL @ Franklin from Vandy.

Possibly being bowl eligible isn't that shocking, Bobby Johnson is the man responsible for Vandy's "improvement".

Franklin has brought a thug mentality to Vandy that I don't think suits them very well.

Coach of the year SEC...

Depends on what happens from here, but right now I'd say Les Miles and Mark Richt.

Les Miles... well they are #1 and have been for a little while now. With all the problems from attacking veterans and fake reefer, if they win the SEC CG, it's the Mad Hatter's trophy.

Mark Richt... from hot seat to throne. To not only survive after an 0-2 start, but to take off on a 8 game winning streak and improving from week to week shows good coaching. I do think that if he won, he would have to share it with Todd Grantham. That D is the main reason for Georgia's improvement.

Petrino has a shot too... basically, whoever wins the SEC CG should get the award.

Gundy and Bill Snyder are my 2 favorites. Dabo Swinney is another, but may be too much under the radar.

yeah but Hoke would have gone 8-4 with players that aren't meant to be in his offense, which is what hurts them.

this season was supposed to be a complete mess.

Not a chance. Hoke has to beat Ohio State at the very least.

I'll tell you this, it's NOT Bielema. Sure the Badgers have a good shot at winning the Big Ten and going to the Rose Bowl, but they've got one of the best three QBs and one of the best three RBs in the country. They should be undefeated if BB didn't think he could coach special teams by himself.

It also should not be Dantonio because he's a complete tool.

Vandy has more BCS-AQ teams in their OOC schedule then Boise State. Wake Forest isn't a scrub and they play at Wake. UConn is a scrub but Vandy can't help that. UConn made a BCS Bowl last year.

While I think Gundy and Snyder are the likely choices in the B12 I also think Paul Rhodes from ISU should get some love if the Cyclones can get bowl eligible. They were picked last or next to last in the B12 coming into the eyar and he has them on the verge of being bowl elible with some nice wins. Of course the odds of him getting a win over Ok State, Oklahoma or Kansas State isnt the greatest but if they do I think he would be a nice choice as well.

I'm gonna have to call you on this. UConn was a scrub even when they made a BCS bowl. If Vandy gets credit for playing UConn then Wisconsin should get credit for playing Oregon State. Neither is a perenially good team.

all are terrible AQ schools

Wake Forest is definitely a scrub

they lost to Syracuse got blown out by North Carolina and they have no fans

that defines scrub, not to mention the one point win over Duke.

Uconn making a BCS bowl last year = them being the worst team to make a BCS bowl ever.
