Sure this is a well known story but it's not the norm. There are thousands of pro athletes out there who are being steered in the right direction by their agents. Hell their agents are like their big baby sitters in a lot of cases.

Athletes need to remember one thing that was pointed out in that ESPN 30-for-30 "Broke" episode. The agent & the financial adviser should generally not be the same person. An agent is someone who is good at making deals & obtaining the most $$ & best situation for their client. They are basically a good salesperson.

This is contrary to a financial adviser who is generally someone who figures out a plan & the best way for their client to retain & make the most of the money they accrue from their job. These are two totally different roles & quite often involve people with significantly different personalities and skill sets.

Oh I get that. But the agent is the player's babysitter. One awesome story was a player firing his agent because he couldn't get Wamart to open on Christmas morning so the player could guy a gift for his kid. That is how much many players rely on their agents.

I'm not saying they are there to suggest which mutual fund to purchase. I am suggesting they are there to advise a player that he may not need to continue to give his cousin $100,000 every 2 months.

Unless there's a criminal act or fraud going on, I don't see him having any problems getting those debts discharged through a bankruptcy.

Even the IRS debt, if not dischargeable can be negotiated down.

Yep. After a while a lot of this comes down to common sense. If someone is stupid enough and/or feels entitled to do stupid things then so be it - they deserve whatever comes their way. God knows that in this era all of these players have been warned over & over again about the horror stories, the potentially short career, the scammers, the women, etc, etc.

Again - it is like smoking. If you have been warned numerous times yet you still continue the behavior & suffer as a result - tough - you deserve the punishment. In both cases - I can somewhat understand somebody acting this way many years ago but not at this pt in time.
