I don't know where that came from. It's super regional. That's pretty much a Charleston thing, and the Georgia lowcountry eat it just as much. I grew up in SC but never had it 'til I was an adult (and it's not very good - Shrimp (awesome) + Grits (awesome)=pretty bad food.) SC is much more about BBQ (ideally with a mustard sauce), BBQ hash, she-crab soup, and boiled peanuts.

Also, the lowcountry has always sucked at football compared to the upstate, so very few of those guys would be on Clemson's team.

I say give me the pizza and burgers.

I thought Charleston food was damn good when I visited there. Went on one of those walking food tours so we tried a lot of different foods.

I thought the shrimp and grits was fantastic....along with several other things.

Coming from Texas, the BBQ was just meh. Give me my mesquite smoked stuff.

The only reason this is news is because it's Trump and people will take any chance to make fun of him. They make it sound ridiculous or try to put it in a negative light that Trump served fast food to Clemson. I wouldn't be surprised if Clemson requested that food for their visit, but you wont hear that from the media, they'll just tell you how laughable it is that Trump served fast food to Clemson.
