The salary made sense when they signed him after 2015.

There was real fear that the TEXAS RANGERS were going to sign him. It was 50/50 between BAL and TEX.
Os fans were terrified and loud in harassing the Angelos family to not let him go under any circumstance.

He was only 29. He had really good years from 12-15. Plus, he was a gold glove elite first baseman.
And the team was a winner. The stands were full to watch Crush Davis hit homeruns.

Nobody knew he was hooked on PEDs at the time or nobody wanted to know.
Hindsight is 20/20. It was not a horrible deal until the whole PED truth ruined his fake career.

He was busted for PEDs in 2014. He had his only great season & only good season sandwiched around a terrible season before he became a FA. Less than 15 war for his career at the time of free agency.

Signing him to contract of that length after the PED suspension was ludicrous.

I can't fathom how you give a .258 guy 160 million
Twice finished in the AL MVP voting. His 2013 season was unreal. They signed him to a mega-contract following a season in which he hit 47 homers and drove in 117 runs.

Nobody could predict he'd get inside his own head this much, this fast.

He had a 700 ops in 14 and then bubbled with a good 15....but he still struck out 208 times

I can't see anyone giving Castellanos 160 million for example. Yea his highs are not Davis obviously but his bust potential is much lower.

If only the dude had the opportunity to face Julio "Gohper" Teheran during this stretch. He would not have this record & would probably have a couple of homers to boot.

0 for 28. The good news for Chris Davis is that he has 'only' 15 strikeouts, with 4 walks and even a couple of RBIs. That means he's really, really close to actually putting a ball in play and getting a base hit. It may even happen in April!

The best news is for Mario Mendoza, he of the 'Mendoza Line'. Imagine that because you were a crappy hitter in the major leagues with little better than a .200 average, your name games inextricably linked with the cutoff when terrible offensive players should get sent down. Nowadays, if big clubs screw up and sign these doofuses to ridiculous contracts, they just play them anyway. Davis, Dan Uggla, BJ Upton - GMs keep them up (or are unable to send them down). Mendoza's still alive. He's probably laughing his ass off.

Sad for Davis, liked him when he was with the Rangers but his history of K's(or really swinging at garbage) should have shown something like this could always be on the horizon.

yeah. he had a 35.8% strikeout rate in 2009, which was absolutely bonkers then and is still bonkers now.

That's Dan Duquette for ya. An analytics department would have prevented that signing.

well then maybe he should start..... spike his gatorade and get him suspended 50 games anything right??
I think you may be right. He was suspended for 25 games the other year due to amphetamines. It might be 50 or more for second positive test. Not sure.

Again with my Tiger Centric mind the closest comparison I can manage is Cecil Fielder but he walked more and struck out significantly less.

The strikeouts are so killer because unless you keep up a pretty unsustainable power run your BABIP is somewhat a matter of luck... But even less so if teams can shift on you because you have serious tendencies.

So... As you say dig deeper... He is a heavy pull ball hitter and the shift is crushing him when he even makes contact..I actually found an article where last year he hadnt hit a pulled ground ball for a hit yet and it was JUNE.

He needs to see a therapist, or bang a hooker or something.
