As a black man, would you be ok with a professional team calling themselves Blackskins? And having a black man as the logo?

To be clear, I don't want the Redskins to change their name, I'm an NFL fan and it just wouldn't sound right. But I'm just curious what your take is on calling a team "Blackskins".

:L

Well I'm Amerasian and I'd feel the same way if the name was white skins or yellow skins.

Please, Do some research and think about 'context and intent' for the love of god.

The problem with that stance is that some people - whether correct or not - believe that the term Redskin is/was also used as an honorary term. You can debate that, but there is certainly no way anyone could argue that "Blackskins" is a good term.

BTW - if the Redskins change their name then expect the name & logo for your hockey team to also change. I know that the name is not derogatory. However - do you honestly believe that the PC crowd will stop with this name change? These guys are the ultimate egomaniacs, and one of their traits is focusing on this type of BS to divert attention away from their lack of legit accomplishments.

I always worry about that.

I personally like the Native American themed team names.

Blackhawks
Seminoles
Braves
Chippewas

I think most of them are great names and logos. And do much more to honor those people than dishonor them.

Hey I'm all for respectful debate. And I certainly don't expect everyone to feel the way I do. :suds:

Just haven't seen ya post here before and that is a tired argument that we have literally beaten a dead horse over from every angle. Feel free to browse thru our seemingly 300 threads that are devoted to it.

IM secure enough in myself that it wouldnt bother me. And IM not arrogant enough to think that i can change how some one thinks or feels by telling them they cant use a particular word because it hurts my feelings. IM also not arrogant enough to think that because my feelings are hurt that every other member of society should be outraged and rally around me to correct an injustice that in the grand scheme of things means squat. And to tell you the truth, if they change the name, I have suggested we switch to the Virginia Rebels and sport old dixie on the side of the helmet. Might as well be blatant about it. And the end all be all is that this is all about money when it comes down to it.

And just to be clear, IM not saying you are that arrogant or insecure. BUt I think the people behind this are.

Well, the reasoning for this thread was the name of the team, so I just thought I'd check it out, and then I became curious as to what his opinion would be.

I think the Redskins name and logo is iconic in football. I don't want to see it changed for that reason alone.

Fair enough answer.

Cheers.

If you were to ask people in the US and around the globe one question, without any leading tone or content, "what's the first thing you think of when I say the word, 'redskin'?" I bet you more people (NAs included) are going to think, Washington Football Team, not Native American slur, almost every time.

Agree. Also - unlike perhaps some others here - my biggest problem with this is the motivation behind a lot of this. Funny how a lot of this was pretty low key until recently. I truly believe that most of these politicians and media types are in this for attention & will take full credit for any name change. I have my doubts whether a lot of them could give a crap about any Native Americans or their issues.

That ad actually points out current Native American issues dealing with poverty and other related issues. I would like to believe that those issues are more important than a name change. Oh well - so be it - we live in a time where people are much more interested in getting credit than in resolving issues or worrying about true day-to-day problems.

that is the rub here . see native americans have real social problems that congress has routinely failed to act on so they figure lets look good rather then be good

What the commercial doesn't tell is what happened to all the Indians on that commercial or how they ended up on reservations etc. How many people who are making these ads, politicians denouncing the name or just fans calling our team and fans racist have ever said a negative word or tried to help native americans who live in poverty on reservations?

The Redskins cannot win a marketing war against these people. They would be best to just say we are proud of native american heritage and that is what we honor.

I think my biggest fear is how the media and our government is deciding what we allowed to say. As someone heading towards 60 in a few years it saddens me to see what we have become. It is a damned shame that people call us racists when nothing could be further from the truth. It makes me sad that young people might have to live in a world where the government can decide what you can say or do. That is against everything this country was founded on.

What ads like this also dont tell is that Native Americans of influence are the quickest ones to take advantage of other Native Americans. And yes I can factually say this as Some one I know rather well works for a Native American owned company. they get first right bids on government contracts, and in some cases exclusive rights bids. And yet on the flip side they are allowed to have practices that say that they will only hire Native Americans to work these contracts. For the right to have first bid or exclusive bid, they are NOT held to the standards of paying the Natives Americans they hire minimum wage. Its all handled under tribal law rules, so basically they are screwing over their own. But its all the evil Redskins fault.

This is how this is all going to play out. It comes down to money. Snyder will continue to hold fast up until he starts losing sponsors. Unfortunately its ads like this that will give advertisers pause. When it starts to make a dent in Dan's wallet and in the paychecks of the NFL brass, then the name will change. Its going to happen, its just a matter of time.

If Dan and the NFL were smart, they would make sure none of their partner networks run these types of ads. And as the Senators from DC and Maryland seem to favor the name change, I would start negotiating now to pull the stadium and team name rights away from both DC and Maryland.

IM still going to suggest the Virginia Rebels rocking the Old Dixie flag when ever the name change does come.

I like that idea, I'd love to see how the Networks would handle that situation. I'm curious if there is any language in the contracts between the Networks and the leagues about the Networks running anything that could be considered negative about the league or one of their teams.

i read somewhere and heard on the radio that all of this is coming out hard now because the patent thing is about to go against them . in fact the judge may have already informed them

in any case right now we are dealing with runaway socialism but the flip side is america is waking up after 6 years of the nanny states incompetence

I would be willing to bet that NBC or ABC would pay more and sign an agreement to not broadcast anything that would directly disparage the league or its members in order to get the lions share of the games out of the hands of Fox.

Ideally, the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board will make a ruling soon. The hesitance of their impending ruling and some recent denials of a couple patents using the term Redskins is being cited as an indication that the Board is leaning towards vacating the Washington Redskins Trademarks. I think it’s just the opposite. Hesitance in a court of law usually demonstrates there is not enough evidence to overturn the existing ruling. Especially when you consider the Board is now reviewing a challenge that was overturned by a District Court. This leads me to believe that Senator Reid would be better served trying to utilize his legislative influence to urge the judicial branch of government to bring a legal conclusion to this matter. Quite possibly Suzan Harjo, Ray Halbritter and the name opposition leaders have been informed that a positive ruling is highly unlikely and these current threats and acts of aggression towards the NFL and the Washington Redskins are a last ditch effort to get the team to voluntarily do what the courts cannot. As such, we continue to watch theatre consisting of a calamity of errors, true lies, and the Washington Redskins.

Actually the courts have no grounds to revoke the trade marks unless they are going to go off of the whole, we feel uncomfortable and thus it needs to change. If I wanted to name my company crack hoes unlimited and have a logo of a strung out street walker in a thong, the courts SHOULDNT have the right to revoke a trade mark legally given based on the fact that my trade mark hurts some one elses feelings.
