Perhaps - but it could also just be that this is the slow time of year for the NFL & Redskins & there is not much else to discuss. One way or another - I want to move on to talk about actual football. This is one of the things that bothers me about things like this - just another reason for outlets like ESPN to talk about anything except for the actual competition. They have ruined sports coverage to a major degree.

howdy SoCal...it's not just sports media, it's media coverage in general. It's past the point of return.

You would not believe how many games I watch each year with the sound turned down.

I gave links with the tribal name. If you didn't click, that's not my fault.

Far from a socialist. Just my opinion. If you want to disagree, than disagree don't go accusing me of some bullshit.

So what if its about the money. If its what the tribes want, its their right. If anyone has a right to be offended, its them. I didn't say I'm offended as I'm not a member of those two tribes. If their councils oppose said name, well they have reason and cause. No one eless opinion matters and it should be worked out between them and Synder. What you THINK doesn't matter. Nor do what I THINK. I have an opinion about it so stop trying to go all ape shit and talking about mules and land like its even relevant to our discussion.

yeah 11 guys with an agenda , the councils voted yet every poll taken says the opposite

I listen to the home team coverage (always with skins games) whenever possible. Sometimes it's not synced properly, but it's more than outweighed by football knowledge that is relevant to me.

So much of the sports news coverage is crap today.

I noted that in the first link, the council voted not to address any HS bearing the name. Guess there's not enough notoriety pursuing that. Shows the hypocrisy.

The Council's committee of the whole voted 9-2 Thursday to oppose the name. The measure was sponsored by lawmaker Joshua Lavar Butler, who says the word can have negative psychological effects on American Indians. The statement of opposition also applies to what Butler says are disparaging references to American Indians in other professional sports franchises.

It does not apply to college or high school mascots. The mascot for at least one high school on the Navajo Nation is the Redskins.

Please.

They don't go after the high schools because there is no money there.

I can't seem to get over being annoyed with people spouting factually incorrect info. I gotta let this go. It is what it is. This is not going away so it's part of the new reality of being a skins fan. First the ridiculousness about Griff, 24/7 last year, now this. It's exhausting.

Is it time for Football yet, pretty please?

True that. But it most definitely also has to do with the exposure/notoriety received pursuing a big dog like the redskins franchise.

If they really wanted to show commitment they would simply go after the school boards of the respective states and demand the change. The Senators who apparently support this DO have the power to make a high school change its mascot after all. Yet we never hear of an all encompassing letter to ban the name Redskins from high school and college teams of which State funds are directly involved. Guess its more profitable to go after a private company after all.

 ya, the sheer hypocrisy involved is sickening.

Not to mention the slippery slope of the issue of personal liberties. Accusations of Rasicism that can easily snowball into the witch hunt mentality of Commie back in the day. This may seem extreme to some people. But this style of thinking IS very dangerous. That's why context and intent is so critical.

This style of movement/political attack skirts the edge of directly dictating policy on how to think. I see where this can lead. And this is Regarding a word that has NOT been universally embraced as racist. What will they pursue next? Very frightening.

This kind of pervasive invasion has been slowly creeping into our society over the last 30 years. When we start dictating how society should think and act, we give up the civil liberties this country is supposedly founded upon. I agree that no one should have the right to oppress another person. But when you start saying the use of a word is direct or indirect oppression of another, you start to open up all kinds of issues.

Scary, very scary

Reminds me of this:

Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

Niemöller is perhaps best known for the following quote:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

Agree. 20 years ago today marks the anniversary of the OJ murders. That event & a few others IMO changed the face of news and the media forever. As an example CNN used to be a reputable media outlet - it is now complete crap that focuses on things like Justin Beiber, the Khardashians & whatever else is trending. Like you alluded to above - sports media just follows their lead.
