This thread has basically become "who was/is really good that you've enjoyed watching".

Reggie Bush, Billy Sims, those ND guys - they aren't on this list.

Prime Time, Tebow, The Boz, those are the types that belong. The types that folks with no interest in sports even know about.
Reggie bush was a household name to people who didn't even watch college football. I would say thats bigger than the game

Ernie Davis and President Ford also are added if that is criteria.

Ernie maybe before movie. But I just don't know enough about him during his playing days.
Ernie Davis was iconic long before his movie came out. First black Heisman winner, and he was great, but he wasn't even the greatest Syracuse RB of all time. That would have to go to Jim Brown, whom I would consider "bigger than the game" in his own right.

Rudy isn't "bigger than the game." His noteriety is because of a plucky underdog story. He made virtually no impact on the sport, and ND was already a franchise brand. It was because of ND's stature that Rudy's story matters at all, not the other way around.

This thread is about bigger than the game, walk into a bar and ask someone who Ernie Davis is. Do you honestly think they'll know?
The question is would people in his day have known even if they weren't necessarily college football fans. It's not a matter of how long their name has stood. Hell, most young kids today wouldn't know how Bo Jackson was or heard the name Marinovich, but at the time they played everyone knew those names. Inside and outside of the fan bases that would have followed them.

Maybe in Socal, but not really anywhere else.

I'd disagree, Reggie Bush was the first person that came to mind. Him and Michael Vick transcended college football the most IMO, at least in my lifetime of watching college football.

Did you miss out on the 80s?

It was like cartoon characters w/ Marinovich and Boz.

Yes, born in 85. Never saw those guys play or what made them "bigger than the game" Didn't start watching college football, at least to my recollection, until like 1996.
