Dodgers traded Matt Guerrier to the Cubs for Carlos Marmol... maybe a change of scenery and no pressure will help this guy...hell of a pitcher when he is on...nice low risk trade for the Dodgers
You might be right. The only thing I like about this trade, though, is that it only cost Matt Guerrier and the Dodgers only have to pay a minimum amount of Marmol's salary. Mattingly needs to keep Marmol away from the 8th and 9th innings.
Colletti had better be working on better trade scenarios than this, however.
The difference between Marmol and Guerrier is Marmol has more upside and can throw it pass someone. Now we know there are control issues but it was a safe trade and maybe the change of residence will help him. The Dodgers sure are getting guys in the pen that can fire the pill.
Overall, I wouldn't have made the trade, but the Dodgers did get some "international money" to put to use. Today might be the day the Dodgers land Nolasco.
I was just gonna say that Silas...today Nolasco replaces Beckett in the rotation and then Fife can move back to the bullpen. I would go to playoff war with Kershaw,Greinke,Ryu,Nolasco and Capuano... no question.
I am still of the opinion that Ethier will be dealt prior to the deadline and now feeling good about Chase Utley as our 2B with Ellis moving to 3B.
If Marmol was dfa'd then that makes sense. He would have been a disaster. Hoping L.A. Lands Nolasco. The Dodgers would indeed have a nice looking starting staff. I like Mark Ellis, but Utley would be a big offensive upgrade. It will cost dearly to get him, though.
If you look at the numbers on this trade and the cash exchanged, what you really get is two useless (DFA'd) relievers being swap to hide that the Dodgers just paid 2:1 on the dollar for the International slot money.
The Cubs got rid of Marmol for PR reasons, the Dodgers got rid of Guerrier because, unless there were injuries, he was never going to pitch in a Dodger uniform again. Some in the Dodgers organization think they can fix Marmol, and if they do, great. But that hope is just a bonus and was not the motivation for the trade.
Neither team is obligated to use either pitcher.
TL;DR - The trade was 100% about the Cubs selling that slot money to the Dodgers.
