The rumours were he was looking for close to $5 million per season (also known as Bieksa money)

Hell yes!

I would have thought $4/mil per would have been around his asking, but hey, its an extra half million to a guy who's a great player, an important character on the team, and a stellar human being. That's a small price to pay, especially since I work near Verizon and may get a flat tire one of these days. :)

Besides, he's my favorite guy for postgame interviews...

On contracts: "I don't lose sleep at night because my salary is X amount of dollars when I think it should be Y amount of dollars. I lose sleep at night because I've been in the league five years and we still haven't won a championship. I wake up in the middle night frustrated because we lost out in the first round and I want to see our players hoist the Stanley Cup. That's why I lose sleep. I don't worry about 13 months from now not having a paycheck."

To his coach: "I said: ‘A lot of times you give us the positive motivation. But I want to tell you that you’re a good [expletive] coach. Don’t you forget that. I don’t care what you’re hearing, what people in the paper are writing, you haven’t lost the room, you haven’t lost me.’

On not underestimating your opponent: "They're GOING to have their best game of the year. They have to."

On scoring: "If you want money, go to the bank. If you want bread, go to the bakery. If you want goals, go to the net."

Next on the list now... Karl Alzner.

in more ways than one

Laich deal front-loaded with $6.5 million next season then $4 M each of following 2 yrs; $4.5 M in 2014-15; and $4 M each of last 2 yrs

Front-loaded free agent deals a function of prospective 2012-13 rollback/lockout.

6 years is a lot for a guy like Laich...well, IMO 6 years is a lot for a large amount of players in this league. Good hit though. Makes it seem like Semin trade is more imminent.

He Laichs us, he really, really Laichs us...

"It came down to running the risk of losing Washington, was what it was," says the 28-year-old center. "I knew unrestricted free agency was a week away, but I didn't want to run the risk of going through the draft and have Washington trade a draft pick or trade a player or something for somebody that could do my job with them thinking that I'm not planning on returning.

"My intent the whole time was to return. That was the only option. We got to a point where it got very close to the draft and I really wanted to get the deal done so I knew for sure I'd be going back to Washington. You never know could happen at the draft; they could have made trades or gone in another direction. I didn't want to lose Washington."

This may not seem like much, but almost no Washington Capitals would have said this in the 70s, 80s, or 90s save maybe Dale Hunter, Olaf Kolzig, and Peter Bondra. It's nice to hear and a sign that this town has maybe turned a corner as a hockey town. :)

Kelly Miller and Joe Reekie were like that as well once they became a part of the team. Also, Brendan Witt tried like hell to not get lost in the system but he was treated like dirt towards the end.

EDIT: Also, Calle Johansson....
