With the 5 cuts today including Costa and the cap carry over, I have us at 15.975MM over the cap. Cutting Durant and Parnell gives us another 2.75MM, restructure Romo and Scandrick puts us even with the cap. Not bad right for a team in cap hell. Don't have to touch Carr or Ware if we don't want to. If you want to create space for FA restructure Witten and Lee for about 7-8MM, cut Miles if he doesn't take major pay cut June 1st to sign rookies. Wow funny stuff on how we would be in cap hell.

See sand...stick head in it

We got a huge gift from the league. I'm not going through this whole rigmarole again. Our cap situation sucks if you want to see it or not is up to you. every team just got $10M, not just us. Some of those teams will use it to sign their players or free agents, not just to get under the cap. Wouldn't it be nice to not have these horrible contracts and the space instead? You want depth, or do you want to watch guys like Heath out on th field again? We have more holes than we can fill in one draft. Restructuring Romo pushes an aging QB with two back surgeries cap hit further and further down the road. He has $42M in dead money this year and $20M next year even if we don't restructure. What if he never fully recovers? Wouldn't it be at least a little smart to start ticking away at these cap hits?

Sure, but what do you do? Do you say fuck it, let's get this thing straight in the next two years, by cutting Ware now, don't touch Romo and cut him next season, with Witten, and Carr and then probably have two top 10 picks the next two seasons coming in? Well even with that, what do you get for those guys? Nothing at all. Even if you create 40MM in space by 2017, Jerry still has to spend it due to the 95% rule, which means he will once again over pay for a player he likes, which means we will be right back in the same boat. While our management of the cap has not been great, that has not killed us, what has killed us is our mistakes in the draft, not landing a Richard Sherman instead taking AOA, not landing a Kam Chancellor instead taking a whoever we did in that round. This is what kills us. Taking Felix Jones over Jamal Charles, this is what kills us every year. The cap is just a small part of it, not matter what happens with the cap we will have to spend 95% of it every year, and to start fresh just waste years of your best players like Lee who will be 30 in 2017, and Dez who will be 29 in 2017, etc.

The bottom line is this team can't miss in the draft in rounds 1-2 and need to start hitting in rounds 3-7 more than they have. This my friend is the true problem, not the cap.

Could not agree more about the draft problems, but that's a different discussion. I'm happy with our 1st rounders lately and alot of the early picks, but like you say the later picks need to improve by a mile. yeah we have a Murray sprinkled in every once in a while, but there are way more questionable picks than good ones. Half of them look more like bad decisions in rwtrospect than guys that simply didn't work out. we are always trying to find a player that played another spot, or was hurt or something else and even if you hit on them their rookie contracts are sometimes up by the time they learn the position. IMO You should be trying to find an impact player with every single pick. I dont care if its the last pick of the draft. You never know where the next late gem is found and the fact that our $100M QB went undrafted just emphasizes how important those late picks can be. I'll give you a late pick that I think becomes a very good player for us: Holloman. I think he starts next year and becomes a real good player for us for a long time. I love what I have seen from that kid and something tells me he will be one of the picks we point to as being a good late pick. Lets hope we have a couple more this year.

I agree with this. It seems like every year most of the Cowboys picks are guys that are projected to go 2-3 rounds later. Many thought that Fredrick was a reach in the first round last year, and the Cowboys hit on him for sure. But much more often, when we ''reach'' for a pick, they bust.

because Kiper says it was a reach doesn't make it so.
That was my favorite pick of the draft, even before he ever played a down.

Kiper is not the only one calling it a reach. It was a reach, no question about it. However it was a good reach. Dallas wanted OL in the 1st. When all the OL men worthy or 17 were gone Jerry traded back for pkan B. The reason why it was a good reach is there's was a fair chance he'd be gone before we picked again. Yes Jerry could have gambled and hoped Frederick was there for us in the 2nd but he drafted to fill the biggest need. I liked the pick at the time but I freely admitted we did reach.

I never think last pick of the 1st round is a reach .... It
s pretty much a 2nd round pick anyway

I call it a reach because it was POSSIBLE he'd be there for us in the 2nd. I call it a good reach because he filled our biggest need and while he may have been there for it was damn sure not guaranteed.

I didn't say Kiper, but if you want to talk about him, great. I'll take everyone Kiper would have chosen for the Cowboys the last 20 years in the draft and you take everyone Jerry wanted. Good Luck

don't think anyone is saying they would want everyone Jerry drafted. With that said, Kiper would be a middle of the road kinda draft in the last 20 years.

Well they were talking about 3 teams picking him all at the beginning of the 2nd round. So I don't know what you are considering a reach, but it wasn't as big of a reach as the so called experts were saying. If Belicheck drafted they would have called the pick genius not a reach. Its all about perspective I guess.

He was obviously worthy of the pick. So kudos to our scouts, not listening to the hype machines on TV.

I wonder if the last 11 years or so would have been different if it wasn't for at least 3 Jerry Jones disaster moves; Quincy Carter, 2 first rounders for Roy Williams and bringing in cancer Owens. I know there are more but these stick out the most to me during this time.

The rumors that teams were going to take him is one reason I say there was no guarantee he'd have been there for us. Doesn't change the fact he was a reach when we took him. It was a reach that had to be made if Jerry 100% didn't want to lose him.

Agreed. I do have a laundry list and didn't want to mention them all. It just occurred to me, if Jerry would have made different moves with the transactions we just mentioned, if the 2009 season would have turned out differently with more depth and fire power. Without saying we may of been in better shape to other things the past 4 years since.

I by no means am defending Jerry on Draft day. Lets not mistake this.
I am defending him taking Fredericks last year. I didn't like what we got in the trade back, but loved the pick.

I doubt you'll find too many who are not happy to have Frederick. But where he was taken he was a reach. There are some who still think we should have taken Floyd. I'm not one of them the more I read about Floyd the less I wanted him.
