Last night the defense still sucked but did "ok."

But why the hell was Butler playing so far off the receiver when the Buccs had the ball on their 2 yard line to end the game. They backed off period and the Buccs should have blown then out then....I just don't get why the D gets so soft like that and then gives the Buccs so much lee-way to march right on down the field.

No way should they have had even a "shot" to throw it into the end zone during that last drive. Why does Patricia call plays like that and continue to call plays like that!?!?! Drive's me NUTS!

They just decide, "Hey, you guys can do whatever you want we will let you and then maybe just maybe come up with a stop when they desperately need one"

If they continue to do this they will lose a lot of games

And doesn't it look like Gilmore is trying not to tackle to protect himself, letting up, going half speed, etc? Yeah, he's out of position too much, but if he's halfassin it, that's a bigger problem.

The pats play a 'Soft Zone at the end of games. Not my favorite but it does keep everything in front of the secondary and "IF" they make the tackles, it eats time off the clock and forces some QBs to do things that they don't do very often. Like throw an end zone interception to Duron Harmon.

One thing that wasn't mentioned, is that Winston does NOT have a cannon for an arm. That final pass should have been neck or face high. It was a 35 yard pass that started dying about 15 yards beyond the line of scrimmage and ended up at knee/thigh height. There were 8 defensive backs in the red zone and they only had to cover 5 WRs. 2 of those never got into the end zone. One of those was Mike Evans who curled and waited at about the 4 yard line and he had two defensive guys standing with him.

It's a chancey defense but it's worked well for the Patriots for a long time.

Did anyone see Dwayne Allen on the field last night????????????????

This is not the entire truth. Prior to and during the game BB communicates with both Patricia and McDaniels he will only allow the team to do so well thus making others think there is a weakness luring them into playing the way he wants them to. It also affords him the ability to tell the media *" We got a lot of things we need to improve on"..

* BB every week.

So BB wanted the Buccs to start from their own 2 yard line and get within about the 20 with a very easy chance to win the game?

There is a master plan that none of us are aware of.

Replay the last play of the game............

Three D-Linemen rushing and they actually pushed the pocket back.

* D- Backs. Three on the goal line, three on the 10 and 2 on or about the 15. No one was up on the line of scrimmage. Thus the "Soft" Zone. WRs are free to run either short of the goal line or into the end zone. If all of them head to the end zone then all 8 drop into the end zone with them. Two WR went short and four of the DBs double teamed them and four were in the end zone to defend a "Deep" pass which never came. If Brady had been throwing that ball it would have been to the far corner or to the edge of the end zone. But he has the arm strength to get the ball where he wants to get it.

and if you gave birth to me I'd be your son! lol

But yeah, I don't really know why they played how the did on that play and why Winston threw it were he did

BB is a metrics guy. The numbers say play a soft zone, drop 8 back and the majority of time you'll keep the opposing team out of the EZ. Nope it's no 100% guarentee.

What I hated was only lining up 3 guys on the line for last few plays. At least make the O line think you may rush more than 3. Maybe they miss an assignment and we actually get to the QB. Show 4-5 even 6 on the line then drop back.

So far, the best that can be said about the Pats defense is that it has, at times, been adequate. The next opponent (NY Jets) will probably come into the game tied with the Pats at 3-2 after a meeting with the Browns. Even when things were going well, the Pats have had trouble on the road against the Jets. The Jets were supposedly playing for the top draft choice in 2018 but already have 2 wins. On defense, what's happened to Branch? Is it age, poor conditioning, bad attitude, or a combination of all three? BB has 10 days to sort it out and maybe make a move. He has a young kid on the PS (Angelo Blackson) who is 6-4, 318 and is considered fast enough to play DE. Could he replace Branch? I also wonder if, before the end of the season, Riley McCarron, the so-called Wes Welker clone, gets activated. TB could use another WR to run the short routes over the middle like Welker used to do.

They were playing "soft zone" because TB was out of time outs. BB will gladly let them gain about 30 and have to run up to the line and either spike the ball or have to hurry up and get a play off, which could lead to a mistake. It worked out this week...

My question: Did the defense play better or is TB and their coaching staff a bunch of fucking morons???? The first 4 teams to play NE had laid out the perfect game plan to beat NE, and TB was not even near that.....

Been reading Gillmore played more 1on1 vs Evans this week and it showed, I thought he was much better. He is also a much better tackler than we saw, so not sure why he won't wrap them up. Butler played very well vs the speedy D-Jax, who only got his yards when NE went Soft Zone. HT was back at ILB and it showed, they were much better vs the run, except for the series Martin scored on. I like HT in the middle with Van Noy outside. DMC played his balls off and proved how good of a S he is in this league. Harmon was very strong this game too. I am not sure what you do about the DL, they were getting pushed around. Maybe Branch sitting at home in NE will light a fire under his ass. Wise, Flowers, Marsh all getting to the QB and forcing the pocket to move...although someone has to remind Marsh that this is not Sea and we don't commit stupid penalties...you can tell he was coached by Uncle Pete..

On offense...Solder sucks and needs help every game. Short yardage is an issue....can we stop using Hogan on the end around, he is not JE. We have Cooks, Dorsett, White, Lewis for that shit...NE not running the ball more killed a lot of their drives.

How does Gronk injury a thigh during a walk through????
Why is Bolden on this team????
Is this the most stupid NE team you have ever seen in a BB era???

I'm calling it...a trade will be made...Maybe we can swap Joe Thomas for Solder and Clev will get the cap relief when Solder is gone next yr...

We will know next game imo. Yes, they did look better but still are complete morons but I think the Buccs play calling helped the defense a lot

Man... I don’t know. If it wasn’t for missed fg’s we would have lost. Almost still did lose. The Patriots defense didn’t really give up any big/devastating plays as usual. But still committed so many dumb penalties. Our oline is still horrible. Can’t remember the exact stat but the Bucs has just one sack all year. They get 3 against us and beat Brady like a drum all night.

My grandson's high school team used the Patriots Soft Zone last night during their opponents final drive of the Game. We were winning 42-36 and kicked off to them with 3:00 minutes left in the game. They initially kept running the ball to eat up the clock figuring they could score with less than a minute to go and get the extra point that would give them the win.

Final series.................

1st and goal on the 8 yard line 1:20. Running back is stopped after a 1 yard gain.
2nd and goal on the seven. 1:00 QB drops the ball, picks it up and is sacked on the 15. We call time out.
3rd and goal from the 15. :50 seconds remain. Our coach sends in 8 DBs. They decide to pass into the end zone. We intercept the pass in the end zone with :40 seconds remaining.

Our QB takes a knee. We win 42-36. We have won 6 in a row and are 6-1.

The coach said after the game that he copied the Patriots soft zone coverage from Thursday night and it worked.

Much different between a 8th/9th grade team versus professional players.

The Bottom line is the Patriots got extremely lucky with their play calling of the soft zone
