team friendly, but a full no trade clause to a guy who was still 3 full season from free agency is pretty player friendly, too.3 things
1. Congrats to Cal
2. Can’t believe how super team friendly this deal is. They’ve gotten 3 massively friendly deal in Castillo, Julio and Cal. So wondering if that is part of the issue with FA too, maybe it isn’t just ownership not spending money but maybe no one wants a contract that favors the team so much?
3. Anyone want to bet now that Cal is going to be DH’ing a lot more this year? With all the crap we talk about ownership does anyone see them making this big of an investment just to run his knees and back into the ground?
I didn't get the whole signing bonus thing then paying him $1M for this year. It isn't like football where it plays with the cap numbers so why not just pay him $11M for this year? Maybe I am missing something.Having Cal locked down is awesome. Looking at the numbers, this is a very team friendly deal for a player of his caliber considering how spendy the MLB has become. His deal doesn’t kick in until 2026, so for this year, he’s still getting just the 1 mil and the $10mil signing bonus. The M’s also have the option to cut ties with him in 2031. Great deal.
He will end up being cals back up and DH.So the question now is what in the world are we going to do with Harry Ford.
I will agree the full no trade is good. But for a guy who is one of the top catchers in the sport $23 million seems team friendly to me.team friendly, but a full no trade clause to a guy who was still 3 full season from free agency is pretty player friendly, too.
"a lot" more at dh? i hope not. he's a full time catcher and you don't pay him $100 mill to DH more unless there's an legit reason for it. i'm curious where the myth came from that they've run him into the ground or whatever hyperbole is floating around out there. i see it on reddit and twitter too. he's very early in his career and compared to other full time catchers he hasn't been abused in any way, shape, or form by the org. as fans we love him, but i don't understand where the infantilization is coming from. it was at its peak when the shrieking chorus was blaming servais for everything under the sun, but i don't see dan infantilizing cal either....he'll use him exactly the same imo.
i've got to think that one of the main reasons they've kept a turd like Garver on is because he's Kirby's personal catcher, and that gives Cal regular days off from starting.
it's going to be really interesting to see what happens with ford now.
I think we will find out there intention in Tacoma. LF is the only position right now that they don’t have a top 15 prospect and they tried him out there. To the Mariners he is valuable in LF but trade value he is much more valuable as a catcherSo the question now is what in the world are we going to do with Harry Ford.
