There’s been like 3000 drivers start a NASCAR race, fewer than 200 have ever won. Was he elite? Far from it. Was he God awful? No, most people just don’t understand the average NASCAR driver is a lot closer to Landon Cassill than it is to even guys like Ward Burton

It reminds of when Dale Jarrett defended Brad Keselowski in the Jeff Gordon incident and some poster said Jarrett should have stuck with golf(Jarrett could have been in the PGA if he wanted).

I was like “dude, he won over 30 races and a championship.”

Ward was my favorite Burton.

So who actually won the last race?

2002 Daytona 500 is one of my favorites ...

I was 10 years old, and my grandpa put me up in his race pool, and I drew Ward. 200 bucks might as well be a million to a 10 year old.

well we now know why you loved Ward Burton

i think there is reason to ponder what he could have done if he didn't spend his prime years with Bill Davis Racing. His brother was pretty good with Roush and RCR. That doesn't necessarily mean that Ward would have been successful with better teams, but it is an interesting thought

Ward had the best voice ever, and a hot temper. Plus, I've always had whoever is driving the Caterpillar car near the top of my pecking order.

Jeff was always better than Ward. Jeff gave an interview a while back and pretty much said that Jeff was racing a few years before Ward started, and Ward is 6 years older.

CNBC Story:
NASCAR has removed its rule mandating that racing team members stand for the national anthem.

I swear to God if I see any of them taking a knee I will simply turn to another channel and be finished with the sport. If I can live without the NFL, I can live without NASCAR. I was already holding on by a thread with NASCAR anyway.

I loved Ward Burton. Broke my heart when he was out of a ride. Best interview out there.

Harvick won in dominating fashion.

I don't know if he was a great interview or not. I don't know if he answered questions at all, or answered them well? I don't even have any idea what he said. But I sure laughed everything he started talking. Funnier than any comedian I've ever seen.

Coke must be great for dehydration. . .

Its a lot of quick calories. I know Tour De France riders often have a 12 ounce can of soda in the middle of races, just because it's such a quick calorie boost.

And I know people assume that its not physically taxing to drive a car, but you're not doing it the way they are.

Always hard to believe those 2 were not only brothers but actually raised together. I always thought one must stayed with Mom and one had to go live with dad. Actually I always assumed Jeff stayed with mom and Ward must have gone to live with dad.

One spoke normal and the other spoke like a character from King of the Hill

Ironic too in that he was horrible...?

I would hardly say he was horrible. Just keeping a ride for as many seasons as he did is quite an accomplishment. And anyone who got even a single career win while not driving for one of the mega teams IMO had a successful career.

But I'm biased, my uncle was a cup series driver who had a single career win, and I wouldn't want to think of him as being horrible.

Ouch! Low blow. One of the biggest what ifs of my uncles career. Wonder how things could have changed.

Edit nvm was thinking of the 2000 race with Jeff Burton and Dale Jarrett discussed above, not the 2002 race.

My cousin, 3rd cousin so it's a stretch I know, won the '94 & '95 Daytona 500 and his hairpiece never fell off once.

I'm guessing your uncle is Johnny Benson?
