You sir are wrong. There was a Bowl Coalition and Bowl Alliance before the BCS.

They were made up of the Big 8, SEC, ACC, Big East, and SWC conferences. They were meant to match the #1 and #2 teams in the country.
The Big 10, PAC 10, and Rose Bowl flat out refused to join.

Protect the Big 10 all you want with distractions, I will produce the facts that can easily be supported with a little google.

These coaches make millions over their careers. The players get free rides, celebrity status, and easily enchanted women(I put that nicely). I expect a little more skill and discipline out of them.

There have been good teams. There have still been some great players. But this bowl game nose dive that the conference is in has been embarrassing. Where is that vicious will to win? Where is that insatiable desire to crush those teams the talking heads said were more talented?

The championship game last year was great, but MSU and UW are down this year. Nobody in the conference is even close to the level they were at by December 1st. B1G players top to bottom need to step it the hell up or take the heat.

Had the Big 10, PAC 10, and Rose Bowl joined the Bowl Alliance undefeated's #1 Nebraska and #2 Penn St would have played for the national title in 1994 and undefeated's #1 Michigan and #2 Nebraska would have played for the national title in 1997.

Both Penn St and Michigan were placed against far lesser opponents than Nebraska out there in the secure comfort of the Rose Bowl.

To no fault of Joe Paterno, the Huskers took next best available in 94' w/ #3 Miami @ Miami and in 97' against #3 Peyton Manning's Tennessee Vols.

I understand how the Big 10, PAC 10, and the Rose Bowl would like to hide the events under the BCS rug however. After all Penn St got completely shafted, and Michigan got a share of the title (AP) anyway.

What everyone calls SEC bias today used to be Big 10/ND bias back then. Beano Cook anyone? "Blah blah blah blah Notre Dame. Blah blah, blah, blah Michigan. Blah, blah, blah, blah Ohio St.
The only difference is the SEC backs up the talk. The BCS exposed the Big 10 and it's eastern media pumpers for being frauds.

The Big 10 and it's eastern media pundits were the inventors of the "We beat each other up" mantra.

I'm not trying to hide any of those events. I didn't say you were wrong. I said that the media is the reason the BCS finally happened. If they would have just let it go, I wouldn't be too shocked if the old system were still in place. They didn't let it go. From ESPN to local columnists, it became pretty clear that even fans in B1G land were pissed off and sick of it, and the B1G/Pac 10/Rose Bowl bankers caved to the current system.

I mean you seem to remember so much about that era in the 90s. I'm a little surprised that you don't remember how HUGE of a story it was until the BCS finally took over. The media wasn't protecting anybody. They were driving the BCS talk.

Was Michigan not rewarded with the AP National Championship trophy in 1997?

Did the eastern media Big 10 pumpers not vote for Michigan in mass quantities?

If they truly wanted to send a message to those hiding under the security cloak of the Rose Bowl they wouldn't have rewarded those responsible for it.

The fact is Michigan and the Big 10 were on a drought regarding NC's and their eastern media pumpers were being exposed.

Forgot to mention ABC's Bob Griese pumping Michigan week in and week out as being more deserving of the national title. Ironic as hell that his son Brian played for that very Michigan team.
Never once was he critical of Michigan not having to play Nebraska.
