He had been the oldest living NHL player at 98 years young (and he was just at the Centennial Classic a few days ago in Toronto). RIP Milt.

A native of Kitchener, Ontario, who was born on March 5, 1918, Milton Conrad Schmidt played with Bauer and Dumart in the junior leagues before they were reunited as the “Kraut Line” in the NHL for the 1936-37 season. With the three players of German heritage, the Bruins won NHL championships in 1939 and again in ’41, when Schmidt led playoff run with 5 goals and 6 assists in 11 playoff games.

During the war against Germany, Schmidt considered changing his name — to Smith — but decided against it. (The Bruins held a contest that came up with the suggested “Buddy Line,” but it didn’t stick.)

Wow, 98 is a pretty good run, eh. R.I.P. Milt. The days of being able to give a line a nickname are long gone. In today's NHL, players rarely play together long enough. Hell, guys have different line mates 3 or 4 times in a game sometimes. Or it seems that way, lol.

Milt kick-started the big bad Bruins of the 70's with this blockbuster of a trade with Chicago.

On May 15, 1967, the then-Black Hawks traded forwards Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge, and Fred Stanfield to the Bruins for defenseman Gilles Marotte, center Pit Martin, and goalie Jack Norris. One year earlier, the Bruins had drafted Bobby Orr.

A sad day for hockey but Milt lived a good, long life. 98 is a great run.Til his dying day he always believed Orr was the greatest player he ever saw.
