The defensive backs are playing 7 yards off the receivers. A team can pass all day on that.
That is what I keep screaming at the TV. Yeah, we can blitz all day long, because we are allowing them to complete 7-10 yard passes all day long with that DB padding. The QB will be forced to throw short passes, and DB's will not get burnt much, but we are going to give up 300 yards of passing and a 80% completion percentage.
I want to see our DB's get in the face of the WR, contest them at the line of scrimmage, where they are allowed to put their hands on the WR's and get physical. I would rather us get burnt once in a while than continue to see passes underneath with DB's playing 8 yards off the line of scrimmage.
We're getting absolutely no pass rush and Marvin hates giving up big plays. He'd rather give up long, sustained drives than risk giving up a 40 yard pass.
I know where you are going with this, and while yes, I think Michael Johnson would have an impact on this defense, I don't think he alone made our defensive line as great as it was last year. I think that was more of a scheme of Zimmer's, along with a healthy Atkins, and a career year from Gilberry. We just have a lot of guys not producing on the line right now, and you are right though, we have little to no pass rush at this point. The DL looks tired and beat up and our defensive run stats show that.
For once, I wasn't actually going to mention the Michael Johnson thing.
But, we are not getting pressure. Geno is getting there, but not the same force. Dunlap isn't getting home and Gillberry is our biggest threat but he seemed to get banged up.
Gilberry literally got punched in the head. No flag.
The refs fucked us hard this game.

That holding call on Tits decided the game..... They called it because the entire side of the field was cleared out. On replay it looked questionable -- Certainly not an obvious hold.

The call that decided the game was the official sonehow calling a backwards pass incomplete to Dane
I watched that play on replay last night. Two thoughts. First, if Dalton makes a good throw there, Dane easily gets a first down and he very well might have scored a touchdown. At the very least, we get a first down, the game goes under 2 minutes, we run the clock and Nugent misses a field goal to win in regulation.
I also wondered if it was a lateral. If you look at it, Dalton throws it with his feet standing on the 31 and the ball goes all the way back to the 34. Would that have been ruled one of those, 'you can't advance a fumble for a first down' type plays?
I don't understand the playing off the receivers either, especially the Carolina receivers. We can play man to man.
Geno started to get position too towards the end of the game... hopefully he will be back full strength next week.
But at the end of the day, that FG has to be made. No excuses for an NFL kicker not to make a 38 yard FG.
We have some of the best tackling, very physical set of corners. I am not sure why we can't use that to our advantage. We have got to take more chances that Nelson and Iloka can do their job over the top if a corner gets burnt. Also, I am not sure why the rush has been so bad. We send 7 guys and the LB's and not getting anywhere close to the QB. All 7 guys are stuffed and the QB has 4 seconds to throw the ball. That is crazy with a 7 man rush.
