Sadly the movie is underperforming... It's a pretty cool premise, but I don't see then highlighting many projects if this isn't at least a minor hit.

It’s already almost tripled it’s budget in box office.

The movie was made for dirt cheap

It depends on which budget figure is actually accurate. The budget of the movie is disputed:

Deadline said:
Bad news on Screen Gems/H Collective's Brightburn. While Sony contends the movie cost $6M net before P&A, we heard from two sources with knowledge of the budget that the R-rated horror, anti-Superman film cost $12M net after Georgia rebates, which means Brightburn will not reach break-even after distribution costs. Whether this film cost $6M or $12M, the optics of a $9.5M opening over a holiday weekend for this pic aren’t anything to scream about.

So whether the film is successful at the box office depends on which production budget figure you believe.

If the production budget was $6 million, then the box office is good.

If the production budget was $12 million, then the box office is not so good.

Even if it’s 12 mil.

It’s already 6 mil over the budget after 1 weekend.

It’s gonna be profitable

That figure was just the production budget. It didn't include marketing. That's why the quoted article was rather pessimistic on the box office, and why whether the movie is going to be profitable is going to greatly depend on which figure is accurate.

I’m well aware.

The rule of thumb is you double a movies budget to make up for all the extra costs.

So this movie needs to be at 24 mil maximum.

It would be quite the upset if it didn’t make it there.

Which is just fine against all the competition in theaters now

It might be profitable, but is it enough to warrant the creation of a movie universe around it? I don't think so.

Most horror movies are cheap, and the horror franchises usually start with films that make five times their budget, or more.

Wasn’t terrible by any means, specially considering the budget. But still felt it could have been way better with a few changes. Wasn’t expecting quite the gore in that one either, but I rather liked it.

Brightburn was exactly what Batman in Batman vs Superman predicted would happen if Superman wasn’t killed. I knew Ben Affleck was right all along.

It's first two acts were a tad slow, but still enjoyable. The third act made the entire movie worth it.
