Brassard will be a healthy scratch tonight. Trade looming?

Derek Brassard will not be in the lineup for the Blue Jackets tonight. It's been said that everyone, but Rick Nash could be available. The Ottawa Senators have apparently shown interest in Brassard, but his contract could be a stumbling block at 3.2 million per year. The NY Islanders are also said to be interested.

So is their any fire to the smoke coming from Columbus?

The salary is no problem for the Sens. They are barely over the floor and intend (I'm assuming and hoping) on moving, at least, Filip Kuba before the deadline.

The problem is what does Ottawa have that the Jackets would want. You'd assume it would be a defenseman and probably a young one. Rundblad, Karlsson and Cowen are going nowhere (not for Brassy anyway). I doubt CBJ would move Brassard for the likes of Brian Lee or Patrick Wiercioch. :help:

I think the BJ's are looking to dump salary. If the Isles can get Brassard for Bailey or Nabokov I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Rumor around town is that Brassard had the flu and has not been up to snuff in practice. With the two lines playing like they did Saturday, they can afford to let him sit down. I wouldn't read too much into it. Could just be a mind game thing too.

That said, he is one of the tradeable commodities. It would be a tremendous mistake, IMO as him, Johansen and Vermette could do damage for the next few years.

If they do trade him, I don't see Ottawa as a good dance partner. The Jackets need to steady their goaltending situation, and no way Ottawa gives up Anderson. Alex Auld is not a better solution than Curtis Sanford, and Robin Lehner will not help now. It would be a mistake to let Lehner get away anyway.

The only other need is a solid steady defenseman. They could maybe use a fleet footed D-man to replace the one they just gave away, but I think if they went for a D-man they need a smart one who can be physical. Who fits that bill? Phillips? Murray would be crucified, and rightfully so. Sens fan side would kill. Jackets fan side would do cartwheels. So a fleet footed D-man? Karlsson? No way. Even if the Sens were that stupid, Brassard wouldn't be enough to make it happen. Lee? I like him, and the Sens occasionally don't. Kuba? Gonchar? God no.

I can't see anything making sense here. Which is probably why it would happen. I just can't imagine any trade between Howson and Murray being good for either team.

The Isles are playing the Rangers at the NVMC. Every game against the Rangers is a BIG game. Capuano said in other words, there are players who simply feel they have a spot in the lineup & don't have to work for it. Okposo, Comeau & Bailey are on thin ice.

Fuck this rolling 4 lines and ride your thoroughbred. The guy is no raw rookie anymore. Give him some serious playing time (20-22 min/game) and see how good the kid can get.

The one positive about the four crappy defenseman I mentioned is they're all UFA's at the end of the season.

At this point I'm at a loss for words at how bad this team is. I actually thought they might challenge for the 7th or 8th spot before the season started. Now I just don't want them to finish DEAD LAST. With their luck they'd lose the lottery.
