People die of Oxy/alcohol combos all the time. It has to do with being an addict, not fighting in the NHL.
This has nothing to do with fighting in hockey or legalizing marijuana but EVERYTHING to do with someone not doing their job.
That being aid, you cannot argue that medicinal marijuana as a painkiller alternative would be significantly safer that the opiate derivatives used today. Greg Giraldo, Heath ledger et al..... were all on pain meds for pain that was below what an opioid was truly necessary for, and they would not be dead today if they could use it as a legal option. I am in public health and these accidental deaths are skyrocketing. People prescribe opiates for way too much stuff.

I hate to sound like a prick but I'm calling a spade a spade.
Are you trying to tell me Greg Giraldo and Heath Ledger didn't smoke pot!?

Umm.....
No.....
The pot did not kill them though, the misuse of prescription pain killers did. Read the toxicology report. It is out there.
The science is rock solid on this. Opiates kill. Pot doesn't (at least as actual poisoning goes).
But you said they would still be alive if they had been prescribed marijuana instead of opiates. My view is that they were just fucking junkies and they probably used whatever they could get their hands on, including weed. Even if they had been prescribed marijuana (which is legal in California and I am SURE at least Heath Ledger had a California home), they probably would have still been abusing the opiates.

It could also be Boogard intentionally ignoring the warning or Boogard thinking just having a couple drinks couldn't be THAT bad. We'll probably never know, but sad either way.
It matters not! Like Eloco said you still do NOT take pain med's with alcohol and like Vee said if people think legalizing MJ or banning fighting in hockey is going to stop people from doing it they're living in La la land.
Some of you remember the friend I loved and lost 10 months ago. She never played hockey she choose to get high on drugs and alcohol and it killed her. She would use anything to get high.
If we started using it as a true alternative, the harder prescriptions stuff would slowly ween out of the market. Ledger, i am not sure about. However, Giraldo was prescribed what he was taking for "back pain".
I looked like a junkie.
And Giraldo was a drug addict and had already been in and out of rehab before he was prescribed anything for back pain.
actually we dont know Boogard or what he has been through or what pain he was really in. I really dont think its fair to comment on whose fault it really is. He has died. his death is senseless and someone lost a brother, son, friend and teammate. I didnt like the guy on ice but from what all I read he was a nice man off the ice. thats whats important. He tried to make a difference in the things he did outside the arena and that is sad to be taken away.
RIP bigman.
