Might make certain well-paid relievers expendable to help pick up a serious bat....

Giants | Heath Hembree impressing

Thu, 23 Feb 2012 15:45:02 -0800

San Francisco Giants P Heath Hembree has impressed early on in spring training. "He has a power arm that few guys have," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's nice to have someone like him in the system. He can pitch in the big leagues a long time if he stays healthy. It's just a matter of his development."

I'll be pretty surprised if Brian Wilson is still on the team after the 2013 trade deadline. He could be gone next off-season if the possible arb number is scary enough.

Agreed, sadly. Brian is my favorite Giant.

Agree ... I think that what the Phils gave Papelbon (50M over 4) really sets the bar for elite closers ... Wilson will want at least that much

I wouldn't mind a trade before July 31 - Wilson for whatever bat we may need at the time. I love Weezy to death, but this is a business.

And we all know that Weezy >>>>> Papelbon.

How does Weez translate to $$ for the Giants, though. Dude is a marketing cash cow, and the Giants are a business first and foremost...

It could be this trade deadline for all we know. Someone like the Angels could come around needing an emergency closer.

If the Angels come around offering Jean Segura or Johnny Hellweg (top prospects), it will be hard pressed to pass up.

I think that depends on where we are. If we're (and Brian is) doing well, I don't think they upset the apple cart in the middle of a run for the playoffs. If we repeat the injury and regression nightmare of 2011, maybe they make some deals like that.

If Hembree is already in SF and doing well, I think Weez can be dealt even in the middle of a race. Hembree is recognized all across baseball as a high-ceiling closer prospect who is near MLB-ready.

Of course, the Giants will need to be PAY-ED to part with him, though...

Agreed. Next offseason may be a different story, but this deadline I hope this isn't even a question.

If Wilson is dealing and the Giants are playing well and in the hunt...I don't see them dealing him. He's proven he can handle the high stress situations in the playoffs.

I cannot imagine the outcry if we trade Wilson and Hembree blows a save that costs the Giants in the playoffs...

And why wouldn't he give Hembree his "props", he's showing a 155 kilometers per hour fastball in the bull pen.
