Football was founded without fighting, hockey wasn't. It has been part of the tradition and the way the game has evolved. I don't want hockey to be football, I want hockey to be hockey.

This.

I don't compare because nothing compares!:)

I'm failing to see some of the logic here. You are talking about activities that people do every day vs. comparisons to other sports.

I agree with you that hockey is not going to be an overnight sensation b/c of the presence or lack thereof of fighting.

But one doesn't have to agree with every rule or game change to hockey if they also agree with banning fighting. For example, I actually think they should widen the nets slightly proportionate with the increasing size of the goalie pad changes to boost goals, but I don't really like the shootout (after OT) b/c it's an artificially created scenario, even if it might be more popular than a tie.

Ok then like another poster mentioned boxing and MMA need to be banned as well. The point I was making is these are grown adults who freely choose to partake in an activity that can have dangerous outcomes. They should have that right.

My point about the rules is that when you are using an mainstream acceptance to justify one rule change and disregarding it when talking about another (which I have seen some people here do) you are not being intellecually honest. Mainstream acceptance isn't thier main focus for having fighting removed it's just an easy talking point. I was just pointing out that 'mainstream acceptance' is not always a good thing, or more specifically the benefit does not always outweigh the cost.

Yes, I mean ACTUAL lacrosse.

theres no fighting in the outdoor game because the prepster rapists have a lot more room to run away from the fights ... right off the field and into the parking lots

Not always, no. But for a sport that struggles for ratings/money in some places, I think more acceptance is a good thing. I'm not arguing that fighting would garner that however, so I'm not in the category you are talking about. That said, it's one possible result of banning fighting, so I don't think it's "dishonest" to bring it up.

Fighting has been a part of ice hockey since the sport's rise in popularity in 19th century Canada.[1] There are a number of theories behind the integration of fighting into the game, the most common of which being that the relative lack of rules in the early history of hockey encouraged physical intimidation and control.[1] The implementation of some features, such as the blue lines in 1918, actually encouraged fighting due to the increased level of physical play. Creation of the blue lines allowed forward passing, but only in the neutral zone. Therefore, puck handlers played at close quarters and were subject to a great deal of physical play. The emergence of enforcers, who protected the puck handlers and fought when necessary, followed shortly thereafter.[8]

In 1922, the NHL introduced Rule 56 which formally regulated fighting, or "fisticuffs" as it was called in the official NHL rulebook. Rather than ejecting players from the game, as was the practice in amateur and collegiate hockey, players would be given a five-minute major penalty. Rule 56 and its language also filtered down to the minor professional and junior leagues in North America.[8] Promoters such as Tex Rickard of Madison Square Garden, who also promoted boxing events, saw financial opportunities in hockey fights and devised marketing campaigns around the rivalries between various team enforcers.

Here's the part of the article you clearly failed to read...

Although fighting was rarer from the 1920s through the early 1960s, it was more brutal than it is today. Star players were also known to fight for themselves since fewer professional teams existed and competition was fierce for roster spots; therefore enforcer-like players (who usually possess very limited overall skill sets) did not typically make professional teams.

Thta's the way it should be. The Flyers fucked it all up and people today accept it as if this is the way the game has always been.

People argue that fighting reduces injuries, but head shots and dirty plays have been increasingly a problem the last couple seasons in particular, when fighting has been up. I've long argued that fighting prevents injuries and dirty shots on players is the biggest logical fallacy in all of sports. It's not a popular opinion, but I think if you look at the facts, it's the correct one.

Go ahead, shell me...

Canadian amateur hockey player dies after on-ice fight - ESPN

Too me, It should have ended as soon as this tragedy happened. Unfortunately it will not even be discusses until someone dies (and they will) as a result of a fight in the NHL.

So boxing and auto racing should be banned as well right? Football players have been paralyzed durring games and soccer players have developed bloodclotting in their brains from multiple headers over their careers. So football and soccer need to be fundementally changed too right?

Again, not logical. Nobody is saying "ban anything that can potentially cause death." Nobody is saying "stop playing hockey because it is dangerous." That is a statement your comparisons would be appropriate to, but not this debate.

We are talking about one aspect of the sport, which is not in and of itself fundamental to the game itself. And since some may disagree with that, you could say at a minimum, not part of the regular flow and purpose of the game.

All those sports you mentioned have made changes to make their sports safer, while still not destroying the fundamental appeal of the sport itself. THAT is what we are talking about here.
