for millions where do i sign up,these guys know the risks involved......

Yes, they know the risk, however does that mean that we shouldn't (and by we I mean the league...) try to protect them? Beyond being big investments, these are human beings with lives and families that depend on them for more than just money. I know that fighting isn't even the biggest part of the head injury thing, but to see it coming from guys like Probert who fought, it makes you wonder. The other interesting thing I read on it (as part of this: Sidney Crosby and the Human Car Wreck - Pulling No Punches - March 2011 - Pittsburgh, PA) was that he was listed as having 3 concussions in his career. That's it. I highly doubt that he only sustained that many, and if that was it, then clearly just the constant jabs to the head had some effect. I'm a huge supporter of fighting, I feel it has a place in the game when two guys line up to fight willingly, I feel that it helps police the game and get revenge in a gentlemanly fashion...but if it's potentially shortening the life of a man and making that portion of his life miserable, than it has to be questioned.

Very true, the head shots will never be eliminated, but you have to take the appropriate measures in situations where these things can be prevented. And here's where we circle back to another root of the problem: respect.

And I played in a league where it was part of it and took part in it form time to time. It is idiotic, barbaric and one of the major things keeping the NHL from going mainstream.

Id rather it not go mainstream. NFL and NBA are fucking jokes. Even the MLB.

Then keep enjoyng having to pay for the games, constant lockout s and strikes and the ever looming threat of contraction, or players heading overseas. Going mainstream is good for the health of the sport from mite hockey on up.

I don't consider the nba mainstream, regardless of their tv contract.

This will definitely cause waves in the offices of the league. I doubt the NHL will ban fighting any time soon, but it does make for an interesting debate.

 What sport do you not pay for games? The NFL is about to have a lockout, "America's Game" or whatever the fuck you call it. Throwball, handball, handegg... Any hockey player in the world wants to play in the NHL, not worried about guys going overseas. And if they would stop putting teams in such shitty markets, contraction wouldn't even be a thought.

Straight up, eliminating fighting would destroy the NHL. I definitely see the audience shrinking big time if they do that.

I'm not even worried about them doing it, cause they never will. I'm pretty sure anyone with any sense of marketing could foresee the ratings plummet.

I see your point here, as far as mainstreaming the game goes.

I think a larger barrier to mainstreaming the NHL is the fact that most Americans get bored to easily if there isn't constant scoring. I think hockey, with or without the fighting, will have issues gaining traction here. I also think an argument could made that banning fighting would lose as many fans as it would gain.

But what do I know? I'd rather watch soccer than the NBA or NFL...

I think the big issue in changing anything about pro sports is tradition. It's always been this way, so why do we have to suddenly change it? Well, now we know the dangers that lie ahead for those in the line of fire; can we sit, watch, and enjoy, knowing that with every jarring hit or with every punch in a fight, we could be watching them shave years off their life? It's beyond marketing the sport, or making it enjoyable, it's human lives being drastically altered. Sure, there's always a risk, but if part of the risk is avoidable you have to do something about it.

ESPN3 allows me to watch any college game I ever want.

But regardless....

Even aside from that, it causes dead people and messed up people and it hadds zilch to the sport.
