The Big 12 Conference announces that AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has been selected as the site for the 2017-21 Big 12 Football Championship games.

After a six-year hiatus, the title game returns in 2017, matching the top two finishers in the Conference standings.

“There is great anticipation with the return of the Big 12 Football Championship and we look forward to hosting the event in AT&T Stadium for the next five years,” said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “The building is a state of the art facility and offers many amenities that will be enjoyed by our institutions and fans.”

Under terms of current television agreements with FOX Sports and ESPN, FOX will carry the game in 2017 and odd-numbered years through 2023, while ESPN will handle the telecasts in even-numbered years through the 2024 game.

AT&T Stadium opened in 2009 with a seating capacity of 80,000 that can be maximized to over 100,000 with standing room. Among its many features are a retractable roof, one of the world’s largest high definition video screens and a collection of contemporary art. The building serves as home to the Dallas Cowboys and hosts a variety of other events.

The last two Big 12 Championship games were played at AT&T Stadium and decided by a total of four points. No. 2 Texas kicked a field goal with one second left to edge past No. 22 Nebraska, 13-12, in 2009. The following season, No. 9 Oklahoma upended No. 13 Nebraska, 23-20, behind two second-half field goals. The 2001 championship was also played in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex at Texas Stadium, the previous home of the Cowboys.

The Big 12 Championship was held annually from 1996-2010. The previous 15 games featured five contests in which the higher-ranked team was upset and five that were decided by a touchdown-or-less.

It wouldn't bother me one bit.
How about Oklahoma/Texas on Thanksgiving???

I'd like to say tradition trumps all with College Football but that train left the station a long time ago. I know the environment with OU/Texas is great, but that game in Jerry World late November when both are in the playoff hunt would be an incredible draw.

With the whole landscape, Army Navy is the only immovable object but honestly everything else is subject to change. Michigan Ohio State and Notre Dame USC are set in on their game days, but I could see where if any of those games happened in September it would generate serious buzz.

So 11 AM two week's from now. My guys are cussing the CMU fuckjob because otherwise this one might have meant playoffs for us.

Instead the winner gets the conference title and Sugar and the loser settles for the Alamo.

Personally I have no idea how this will go. 2013 killed me. I bought the team of destiny stuff last year but after back to back games where Blake Bell randomly showed up and a Tyreek Hill moment of his college career no clue how this one goes.

There's a very real possibility that Wisconsin plays Michigan or Ohio State for a second time in a couple of weeks. So what?

It's stupid to have a CCG for a conference that plays a round robin, everybody knows who won the conference. The only thing more stupid is 1 playing 2. The smart thing would have been to expand to at least 12, divide into divisions, and have the division champs the play for the championship, like everyone else does. But we are talking about the Big 12, so doing the smart thing is out of the question.

Who do you think they should have added?

Don't care who they add, there were plenty of schools interested, Houston and Cincinnati come to mind. In any case, they went through that whole process of having a bunch of schools apply for admittance, got everyone all stirred up, and then "never mind".

Yeah....the networks didn't care for us adding members, so they sweetened the pot.

Why the Big 12's (perhaps unwisely) adding a conference title game

So the Big 12 is going to have a Conference Championship game between teams that have already played a head to head match up.

They are using the argument that it will give another "data point" for the Big 12 Champ to get into the CFB Playoff.

How does that work? If Team #1 has already beaten Team #2, how is beating them again going to impress the committee? What happens when Team #2 upsets Team #1? IMO the risk vs. reward doesn't work out to well.

It adds to the body of work, and SOS. It certainly does help. a 12-1 will certainly have a advantage over a 11-1 team in the commitee's eyes. Doesn't mean a 11-1 team can't get in over a 12-1 team but the 12-1 team has the advantage

Who's gonna get 2 cracks at OU?

Double edged sword here. If OU runs the table and loses the CCG it could knock them out of the CFP.

If OU drops one in conference play, this one can get them back to 12 wins.

Still think it's Oklahoma State at this point.
